Clicked #68: Rohtang-La, A Field of Corpses !!!
Hello Fellow Steemians,
Good Evening Guys, I hope you are enjoying the weekend.
Yesterday, I posted about BRO (Border Roads Organization) you can check here.
Today, I will be posting about a pass which is quite famous among the people of country and every year tourists from around the world come to visit this high mountain pass.
The name of this beautiful and dangerous pass situated at an altitude of 3,978 meters (13,058 ft) above the sea level is Rohtang Pass or Rohtang-La.
This pass is quite beautiful and dangerous too as Rohtang in the Ladakhi language (Bhoti) means pile of corpses.
This pass got this name due to numerous people died in bad weather conditions while crossing this pass.
In Bhoti language Ro means corpse and thang means field.
It is a high mountain pass which is around 52 Kilometers from Manali on the eastern Pir Panjal range of Himalayas.
It connects Kullu valley with Lahaul Spiti Valleys and with Leh Ladakh.
People from every corner of the country visit this place to take part in adventure sports like paragliding, skiing, ice-skating etc.
The pass is open for tourists and travellers from the end of May to the mid of October, for the rest part of the year it is closed due to heavy snowfall.
This Pass has a reputation for being the dangerous because the weather is unpredictable (snowstorms and blizzards).
From 2016 onwards tourists travelling towards Rohtang Pass requires a permit which is issued by Himachal Pradesh Government .
They started issuing permits to prevent the pollution in the area by restricting the vehicles, only 1200 vehicles are allowed per day which includes 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles.
For more information about permit, you can click here.
Rohtang tunnel is being built and it will be one of the longest road tunnels in India.
The tunnel is at an elevation of 3,100 meters above the sea level and is expected to be operational in 2019 which will eventually reduce the traffic at Rohtang Pass.
Stay Tuned
Thank you

A beautiful place shown through beautiful photos, though it is a bit sad that it got its name due to the deaths of others. Still, hopefully that serves as a warning to those who might think to not take the unpredictable weather of such a place into account when going there.
Yes it serves as warning to others because of its unpredictable weather in winters it snows about 60-70 feet here

Looks like a really beautiful place when the weather is clear so hopefully it won't claim any more people who get caught out by the changes in weather! Stay safe!
