My Own Lyrics Challenge 1965 - Goldfinger - Anthony Newley, Leslie Bricusse & John Barry

The lyrics to the song “Goldfinger” were written for the James Bond film of the same name. The song as recorded by Shirley Bassey began the tradition of Bond theme songs played for the opening credits.

As the film had been completed before the song was written, various lines describe parts of the plot. Goldfinger almost did not make it into the film at all, as the producer hated it.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1965. Goldfinger went to number 2 on the Billboard chart upon release and ended up number 51 for the year. In 2008, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Shirley Bassey first heard the music for "Goldfinger" before the lyrics were written. She loved it and agreed to sing the song whatever the lyrics would be.

Bassey said that first play of the music had given her goose bumps. She has gone on to give that same effect to many over the years as in this live performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1974.
