The scientific name of the balloon flower actually was not originally Gomphocarpus physocarpus, but asclepias physocarpa. Abroad balloon flower is a perennial plant used as a milkweed that attracts butterflies. Overseas these flowers are referred to as hair balls, goose plant, giant swan milkweed, family jewels, oscar flower, cotton bush, and ballon plant.
