Setting Up a Free Proxy and Firewall Server

in #esteem5 years ago

Do you need to setup a proxy and firewall for your corporate network? Did you find Microsoft Forefront to be expensive?

Fret not, because I have a solution for that problem of yours. Enter IPfire, an opensource Linux based proxy and firewall application that is completely free.

IPfire is a fork of IPCop, one of the most beloved proxy and firewall today.

Installing and configuring IPfire is almost the same as IPCop. But it cannot be easily done by a complete beginner because of the technical nature of the software.

You need to have at least a basic knowledge in networking for you to be able to understand it.

One of the features that I love about IPfire is its ability to function as a transparent proxy.

A transparent proxy will lessen the work of an IT to manually configure the browser of a client computer.

Its firewall can do more than a regular router too. Do you need to block more than thirty websites? IPfire can do it. You need to setup port forwarding? IPfire has you covered.

What about FTP? IPfire supported it too.

Basically, IPfire can offer what paid applications can do it. Go on, try it using a virtual machine before you deploy it.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with proxies. I had to use proxies a couple of times, too. Once in university, my first year, I had to read and write a review of several textbooks. The professor gave each student a different book, and no one had the same one. I didn't think such work would cause difficulty. Still, I was a little concerned after going around to several bookstores and not finding these editions anywhere. I couldn't find them online or in bookstores around the country, it seemed to be a scarce edition. Some classmates encountered the same thing and suggested I look on pirate sites through a proxy with avoidcensorship.org.
