Indigenous peoples' land is being stolen, environmental racism is thriving.

in #environment6 years ago

In Canada and across the USA the indigenous people are being steadily killed. Despite the fact that the so called Indian wars have been long over, and there is peace between the nations of Turtle Island the genocide of the people is ongoing.

In the time since the child concentration camps have come to light there has been a lot of discussion about the importance of keeping families together. Also the importance of immigration and obeying immigration law. One aspect of legal and illegal immigration which seems to be lost on the mainstream media and there for the public is the fact that the children and adults being confined for traveling to the USA are often Indigenous people. Meaning that they are Native central and south american people. Their ancestors likely traveled to North america through the course of time, because these so called international borders are relatively recent inventions. They didn’t exist in the time before colonization.

Now the individual tribes face amazing difficulties in protecting their people, especially the women and children. In many regions of the Americas indigenous people are killed to make way for industry, for instance the farmers in Brazil who are pushing people off of their traditional lands for the sake of modern agriculture.

In North America the indigenous people in so called Canada are being killed through the poisoning of water. Whether it’s mining for metals, fossil fuels or logging all across Canada the indigenous people are suffering from the effects of ecological racism. Industry is more concerned with profit than the long term effects on the individuals who actually are living in the areas which are ruined through their activities, and government covers up for industry.

In the USA, New Mexico tribes face poisoning through uranium mining. The federal government has numerous uranium mines and mills sited on former reservation land, despite the fact that these toxic material producers are killing people neither industry nor government seems eager to halt the activities which are causing the land in the region to become deadly for thousands of years to come.

Most of the profiteers who are actively engaged in the ruination of the world will not be living in the areas they are contaminating. The way this works is pretty straight forward. They pollute and contaminate indigenous owned land, and leave anglo land largely untouched.

It is a modern day example of racism which is largely ignored by media and government. When we have to face our behaviors as they affect indigenous people we experience a sense of sadness and loss, well at least those of us who still foster some spark of empathy and compassion in our hearts. We see that this land, had it been left untouched by the colonizers, could be a real paradise of peaceful people living in harmony with nature. This is a future we all want. This future is in part why indigenous people are fetishized and placed on a pedestal while simultaneously being killed through environmental contamination, and torn apart by institutional racism.

In North Dakota the governor mobilized the National Guard to attack unarmed native people in prayer camps in order to protect illegal un-permitted construction of the Dakota Access Pipe Line.

The use of chemical weapons, so called “less than lethal rounds” and machines of war lead to the people fleeing state sponsored violence and the completion of the pipeline which has since leaked multiple times, in fact it was leaking before it was even completed.

The Apache people in Arizona are facing the loss of the traditional coming of age ceremonial grounds

near Globe Arizona, a foreign based copper mining company was able to manipulate federal and state agencies to gain access to land which was federally protected in order to gain access to the metals which they intend to export. The exact same thing is happening in Bears Ears National park in Utah, except the mineral which industry wants is Uranium.

The long and short of this post is that state sponsored industry is steadily encroaching on indigenous lands, the last of the lands remaining to the people. This violation of treaty law is just the latest in a long string of betrayals faced by native people in the Americas. We The People are not well represented by government and industry which act without honor and in violation of international law. We want representatives who actually serve the interests of the people, and not just state and federal government, we want tribal leaders who won’t sell out the natural resources for a new rolex.

We want to heal this world, we want this planet to heal from the harms it has suffered at the hands of patriarchy and industry. The native people are uniting and rising up. Those who are not acting in the interests of the people will be put out of circle of trust, we are no longer accepting the things we cannot change. Now we are changing the things we cannot accept.
