Insomniac Film Festival #86: Ace Ventura Pet Detective
-via IMDb.com
I really do not understand the appeal of Jim Carrey.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is, was, his claim to superstardom back in the 1990s. It is juvenile and really transphobic in ways that are very uncomfortable to watch. It is not a good film and I cannot understand the appeal. Sure, there are moments where you will laugh but beyond that, it is just not cohesive.
Ventura is a pet detective hired to find a kidnapped mascot before the Super Bowl and he proceeds to mug his way through the movie and perform at a thousand per cent higher energy than everyone around him who quite literally just stand around staring at him.
I don't know what to say beyond that. There is a lot of homophobic humour and there is a plot point that hinges on a transphobic joke that is just gross.
What's good...
I got nothing.
What's Not so Good...
Everything. Skip it.
