What a game, the adrenaline the stress and tension and then the uphoria and the outpouring of relief. This was a match that for others not supporting either team would have likely been bored with, there was a lack of quality, especially in the second half. But for me this is probably the greatest moment I have witnessed as an England fan and experienced one of the best feelings when Pickford saved that shot.

The game started off brightly with England having a lot of corners and free kicks and also a lot of pressure, but gradually Colombia got more and more into the game and by half time it seemed rather balanced. There was also a lot of aggression and arguments between players and this was highlighted by Wilmar Barrios headbutting Jordan Henderson in a freekick, he got a yellow for this but it could be argued that he deserved a red. This constant fouling and aggression was likely caused by the tension of the game and how much pressure both teams were under.

After the halftime break both teams came out strongly but England always looking dangerous from corners forced a penalty from Colombia when Carlos Sanchez brought down Kane at the back post, it was clumsy defending to say the least and was a very easy decision for ref. England after that largely controlled possession and this led to frustration from the Colombia's when they got bookings for late challenges.

England looked to be seeing out the game after the introduction of Dier so goining an extra holding midfielder but instead invited pressure onto us. And then Mateus Uribe hit an absolute screamer from way outside of the box, but pickford was equal to it and made a magnificent save to the right corner of the goal. However all this hard work and Pickfords amazing save was in vein when the scored from the corner in the 93rd minute.

This was incredibly demoralising and England looked just the same when they came into the first half of extra time, however the second half was much improved with Vardy and Rose (who replaced Young in the 101st minuit) Coming close. Also the introduction of Rashford for Walker was very positive because Dier shifted into defense and we no longer had two midfields behind the ball the whole time. But we just couldn't find a way through and so the dreaded penalties came.

Personally I had a strange confidence going into them, I just felt that we would win even though history told me that isn't logical. The first 5 penalties were very good and it looked to be heading to sudden death but then Hendersons penalty was saved, it was a very accurate penalty but properly to easy to read for the goalkeeper. I started to doubt my confidence but then Mateus Uribe for Colombia blazed his onto the crossbar and we were all even again. After this Trippier dispatched cleanly and then Pickford made an unbelievable save above his body to deny Carlos Bacca. And at that point I knew we had this and Dier would score to send us through. And he did cooly without showing the burden of the nation that would have been on his shoulders.

Euphoria and relief were the only emotions I could feel when he scored. And as the rest of the hundreds of people around me watching the match went absolutely mental I just stood there soaking it all in and just enjoying the moment. After that the adrenaline kicked in and like the rest I went completely crazy. So now as I type this I have almost lost my voice the clothes I wear are covered in beer and now I just can't wait till saturday where we take on Sweden in the Quarterfinals

Sort:

Before the game I had concerns about the England defence but they played well. Kane couldn't do a lot. The first half of extra time was torture, they should of changed it sooner. There was a few times when a ball over the top to Sterling looked on but the passing game was a bit too rigid. Hopefully they can adapt for the next game, England are close to being really good but there's still room for improvement

Yeah I agree, the passing game is good but it needs to be quicker and more in behind because if you constantly play it into feet then its easy for teams to defend against.
