Cheap anti-earthquake house [session 3]

in #engineering7 years ago (edited)
Greetings, how are you steemit friends? Wish you good health always. I will continue the discussion on the anti-earthquake house chap, you can read the discussion here [session 1 , session 2], our discussion continues with other construction material choices along with good workmanship, hopefully useful.

The use of wood as an inexpensive anti-earthquake construction material is unquestionable, given that our predecessors have proven it by utilizing wood as home construction material, but what if I combine it with other construction materials?.

As we know in Indonesia generally home use brick wall pair made of clay or concrete, the use of this material is considered easy because of the availability of raw materials to make bricks, but what is a brick?.

Brick is a wall-making material derived from clay that is burned to a lack of moisture content. [source]

Brick with a fired process is a building material that has long been known by humans and has been used around 5000 BC, there are also types of air-dried bricks and use the addition of straw as a binder and known as mudbricks. [source]

Generally brick in Aceh has a standard. [source]

InformationAmount
Length17 -23 cm
Wide7 - 11 cm
Thick3 - 5 cm
Average weight3 Kg/piece

Before we continue the discussion, we should first know the material that is often used as a wall.

  • Wood/Board
  • Woven bamboo
  • Paper
  • Gabion wire
  • Brick [source]
  • Concrete [source]
  • Multiplex
  • And so forth.

Of all the items above, which materials can be earthquake resistant walls?

We know that the material that has lighter weight is the best material to be used as an anti-earthquake material, but what if already choose more heavy materials as construction material, you do not need to worry because if the workmanship in accordance with the standard then you have anticipated the worst impact.

We will study the picture below and what often happens when an earthquake occurs and why.

The picture above, mentions the cause of the damage to the building when the earthquake occurred. image source

As we know that earthquakes cannot be prevented, but you can anticipate the worst effects of the earthquake, you can keep your family by following the recommendation of three C.

C one

Build a simple house/simple configuration and keep it symmetrical.

  • Build a house with a common shape, such as a square or circle.
  • Long and narrow structures up to three times their width should be avoided.
  • Walls greater than 4 m should be supported.
  • The door or window door should use practical beams at the top and practical columns on the left and right sides.
  • When building the terrace, you should use lightweight materials and note the structural relationship well.
  • We recommend using wood or other lightweight materials on the roof wall.
  • Building more than two floors precisely trigger the worst occurrence.

C two

Connect each section of the structure.

  • Follow each standard of reinforcement and connection.
  • Installation of reinforcing steel on a brick wall should be connected to the column.

C three

Use materials and construction that have good quality, and use skilled workers when the process.

  • Material with excellent quality is strongly recommended.
  • Proper concrete mix.
  • Soak the brick before using it.

REINFORCING TECHNIQUE ON BRICK WALL

In this discussion I will only discuss specifically on brick walls.

CONCLUSION

Planning an anti-earthquake house means planning for family safety, so it becomes an important consideration when going to work.

The main consideration is the use of quality materials, more symmetrical buildings and the need for more attention to structural work.

Every house should use the standard anti-earthquake building because we never know when and where the earthquake will occur even though the house we built is far from the earth/earth fault.
