RE: The Curation and Engagement Leagues 🏆 - STEEM prizes & steem-bounty available! 🎁

Wow, this past week included the most time I have spent on Steemit. @abh12345, you Engagement League is addictive. Thanks for putting it on again!

Rumor had it that @janton was taking time off this week to work in the yard so I thought I might have a shot at #1, although that would only be if @glenalbrethsen wasn't on his game. I guess the 100+ degree temperatures drove Janton to the cool safety of the house where he racked up the single-highest score we've seen yet! In fact, it was 50% higher than the venerable @glenalbrethsen!

@janton, I give up. If you can almost double my score on a week that you're taking off, on a week where I'm commenting more than I ever have... there's nothing else that can be done for me. You're the master.

@glenalbrethsen, we gave it the old college try, but it left us with mounds of student loans... and carpel tunnel from all that typing. Good job though, buddy. I'm glad to have gotten to chat with you about things like Costco dogs and newspapers. It was a good week.

@lynncoyle1 I feel a little guilty edging you out, but you were a great competitor! I enjoyed getting to catch up with you this week. That walk to the beach was nice, even if we ended up seeing all the seaweed. Time to get out a shovel and start our new workout program.

I'm going to keep it a bit shorter this week, so congratulations to everyone else as well! You all did great! A special shoutout to @teutonium who is making waves everywhere after finishing school for a while.

Sort:

Congrats again @themanwithnoname I think sooner or later ole @janton will have to go weed eat or something. I noticed you and I are both the victims of the comedyopenmic nomination this week. Maybe we should do something along the lines of the turbo typer being overgrown with vegetation while typing his fingers to the bone. Meanwhile poor ole Jack is in the corner doing the peepee dance.
I see him and @glenalbrethsen going back and forth with this all summer. It really is amusing to watch.

Thanks! It was satisfying to break the 30,000 point mark. I don't know that I'll do it again. It required a lot of constant work. I don't think that's sustainable for me.

Supposedly Janton was weeding this last week, so I wouldn't bet against him.

Yeah, I really enjoyed getting to write something for comedyopenmic. I'm trying to figure out what I want to write for this week. It was a lot of fun, and it didn't hurt to win a little prize money either. I think you should give that story a go!

Thanks I will defiantly have to come up with something since this is second time being nominated. The rules page has me confused. It says 24 weeks that don't seem right I was assuming each round runs a week. I better go back and read more carefully.
Anyway good job on all that engagement. I need to sneak up a few notches next week. See you at the top..... hopefully

I think they had originally thought of running the contest for 24 weeks with winners every week. We'll see what happens next week. I haven' heard if they're ending it or not.

I hope you're able to score really high. Just keep after it.

Thanks so much I can be a bit dense with learning to do a new contest. I did some investigating. Looks like there is plenty of time ... they just got a nice delegation from curie. I am off to think of something humorous. Thanks again.

Hey, congratulations on the prize with comedyopenmic. That was great! I need to see what the other person posted, but you did get second place, right? They decided to give me a door prize for my efforts, so after being told I wouldn't be eligible for anything, it feels good to be recognized with something. I think I'd like to do that on a regular basis. Just need to come up with it. It seems to be harder to do when it's intentional than when it's off the cuff, but we'll see.

@glenalbrethsen Why did they say you were not eligible ? I need to do an entry this week but am like you. I throw out jokes playing off other peoples posts or comments. Trying to be funny deliberately is a whole other thing. I would hate to come up with one and not be eligible.

If you haven't already, it's worth going and tracking down their original rules post. They generally have it linked in either the new week's contest post or in the result one.

In my case, I failed to see the part of it where it said the entry needed to be totally original. While I'd say 99% of it was, the joke itself is well known and even published. So, even though I came up with 2000 words of backstory for our thieving convicts, the joke wasn't mine. I did get a door prize, though, which was very nice of them.

Yeah. It's strange, but the comedic juices flow when someone else is saying something. I have had some success when I've been writing in script form, or a dialogue back and forth between two imaginary people. I might have to go that route. I just need to shorten it up. Too much time for something that might not pay off. There's a bang for the buck quotient to be met. :)

I don't think I got second place, but I got a prize. I'm really thankful for that. I see they gave you one as well. I'm glad you got some recognition out of it. You can always wait for it to be off the cuff and enter when you get inspired.

I'm not sure how much back and forth janton and I are going to do. His number of comments is going to make it difficult, especially if he's keeping the character count up. However, I will do my level best, whether he's overgrown by weeds typing his fingers off or he's out in his yard working, to get the CL record back. One way or the other, that one is mine. Then, if I manage somehow to get back in first place, I hope it's only after he's done his best, too. Just not that satisfying if both aren't running as fast as they can. Plus, who knows who else is going to show up around here and blow it all out of the water. Maybe you? You just never know. :)

I just may give it a shot, one of these days when I have a whole week to devote to it. I think that really is the kind of thing I would have to plan in advance and hit the ground running on the very first day. I am thinking before I put that much effort in we better wait and see what the scoring changes consist of. That could be a game changer.
I can see a power up being factored in but thinking about it I hope it wouldn't carry too much weight. Just because then points could be bought instead of earned.
I should read back and see if he left any hints about the changes. ;0)

Well, in a conversation he and I had he was talking about drilling down even farther into the comments, rather than two down, hitting farther down. I don't know if that's what he's going to do or not.

I suggested he keep it the way it is and add back in the replies on other peoples posts, but I don't think he's actually looking to add a column as he is to replace one.

He generally doesn't leave a lot of clues, and he's pretty good at just not answering a direct question, either. He doesn't want people gaming the challenge and I don't blame him. The curation part of the leagues got hit by people creating scripts. I'd hate for anything similar to that to happen to the engagement side, though it has at least once. We start automating or spamming engagement, there's no reason for a league anymore.

I am surprised that there even is a way for that to actually happen. The comments seem pretty complex especially at the top of the list. I do agree with you though I am just figuring out how it all works, It would be sad to see it messed up now.
I didn't even realize he only counts two down. Some of the best conversations are only getting started at the second comment. At any rate it will be fun to watch a new spin added on. That really could end up being a game changer especially in the top 5 to 10

Okay, so this is how I understand it to work with the two down:

He sees the first comment on the post, and then the reply. On the next reply, which would be from the person who commented first, that's when the count begins. And then, it keeps counting as far as it goes down. So, subsequent comment is being counted.

I think where he was talking about doing is drilling down farther, into another layer, like fourth down. He was describing it as wanting to better measure true engagement. As it is, he may have come up with something else entirely.

So, every comment you make gets counted in the total comment category. Then, once that second comment begins, all of the subsequent ones get counted as replies.

There was someone a while back that was basically repeating the same information over and over with a little bit changed depending on who was being addressed. I don't know if it was automated or not. If not, it was type a sentence or two, then paste the main message.

That hasn't happened as far as I know since. I don't go in and look at what everyone is doing but I did this one because they're comment count was incredibly high and they won the league that week.

So, it is possible to do, but fortunately, not very often. The curation part though apparently happens a lot.

Thanks for taking the time to explain. That makes a lot more sense. I want to pay attention to how the scores work because I hope to shoot for top ten. Not often maybe once a month I almost made it last week so it is a doable goal. The two deep is just ice breaker sometimes especially on a good topic. Glad to know I won't have to change up the strategy.

Congratulations @themanwithnoname! If anyone is going to edge me out, I'm glad it was you :)

With Jibber Jabber Janton out there (@davemccoy and I spent our engagement time coming up with that haha), I gave up on first place several weeks ago. And now Glen! Geez, now I'm fighting for third place! :)

I'm glad to see Glen back in it. It would be hard to get motivated if everyone else was getting rewards, but I wasn't. Granted, he gave up rewards voluntarily because he was consistently smashing records, but now I'm glad he's going for them again.

I'm not even sure that Janton does anything other than Steemit. I believe he only sleeps for part of the night, then gets up for a while, then sleeps more. He talked about taking his dog out at midnight/1am or something. And his scores seem to show that.

If you can type 60 words per minute and if the average word you type is six characters long, then you're typing 360 characters per minute. That means he spent 678 minutes in physically typing. Doesn't include reading or thinking, just typing. That's 11.3 hours of pressing the buttons over the last week. Being that I only spend maybe 10-20% of my time (at best) actually typing, that means he probably spent between 56 and 112 hours on Steemit. That's between "more than a full-time job" and "almost three full-time jobs" worth of time. I can't compete with that.

I think my new target for the Leagues is to get a "0 upvote" reward. Ha ha. I could get 1 Steem prize and not spend the crazy number of hours I spent this last week on Steemit. I need to get out more and enjoy life. Maybe I should go to the beach. We'll pick a day and go. Then it will be like we're at the beach together. They even have seaweed at one near me. ;)

Janton told me that he is also a real home-body and that steemit is right up his alley. I think he just naps in his computer chair and has taught his dog to use a litter box :)

Beach day it is!!! I'm in :)

Beach day!!! I'm so excited. I love the beach, especially warm ones.

You and No Name were were only 139 points apart! Hard to tell how he eked it out, but it was probably the 10,000 CL more he had versus the 70 more comments you had on him. That's my guess. Not by much, though. It obviously could have gone either way.

At any rate, it's more fun when it's close. Gives us all more reason to try to do more the next time.

In my case, there was a 18,500 point difference between me and j3. A few comments ain't going to do it. Not even novel length comments. :)

I do like being the underdog better, though, but I don't expect this to turn around pointwise anytime soon. There's just so many hours in the day, and I sleep. I don't stay in my chair and nap. I go back in the house and up to my bed, then try to roll out of it each morning. :)

That is a bit of a spread between you and janton! I noticed the same; just crazy actually :) And I don't sleep well, but I do like to sleep when I can. In bed. :)

If a bit is a canyon, then yes. I won't say what canyon, though. I don't think it's quite Grand Canyon size, but it's definitely a wide gap. But then he ended up tripling the score of ninth place, so it was just a runaway freight train for all of us. :)

haha! gotcha this week! well sir, I didn't take off to work on our property like I wanted to, mostly because of the 110 degree weather, today it's 111! But I gotta get to it this week so I am indeed stepping back so go for it! give Sir Glen a run for his money! actually I did slack off some this week, coulda pressed much harder.

thanks so much for the kind word and this excellent comment shows why you are so far at the top! It;s been a blast talking to you this week, I just wish you could develop a sense of humor! thank you sir!

I'll let Glen have it. I figured with you (supposedly) taking this last week off that I'd make the push. I went hard all week, searching out new articles and authors. I commented like crazy and put out a few extra posts. I got my all-time personal best score. Even with all that, it was only about half your score! And now you're saying you could have pressed harder? I'll take a participation prize and let someone else try to catch you. I know when I'm beat.

Don't wait too long to fill in those cracks by the foundation! Good luck on your other yard work.

well sir, you did really good and should be proud of that accomplishment.
Glen is very gifted and few are as gifted as that. I'm not, I'm just stubborn.
plus, none of this is work to me, this is strictly play time and having a blast.
thank you sir!

Hey, @themanwithnoname!

I think we're all going to let janton have it, whether we like it or not! Could have pressed harder. Okay. Press harder then. Let's see if he can beat me by 40,000!

Congrats on the personal all time score. That's always good when you can do more than what you've done before. It's really the best measure, because we're the one who we consistently have the same amount of time, efficiency and ability with, right?

I'm going after the CL record. Whether or not that gets me back to No. 1 is secondary. I still feel like others could use the prize money more than I, but I guess it's better to be all in than not. You're welcome to come along, though. I know it takes a lot of time, and so do what you got to do.

Could have pressed much harder. Yeah, great. Whatever. This is like superman versus the ant, then. Mere mortals, I am just toying with you.

Do what you got to do with the yard. Somehow, though, I don't think it's going to take the entire week, and I'm sure I'll still be somewhere in your dust.

No Name sounds like he's backing off, too. Of course, I've heard all of that before, and then no one slacks off, so I'm just going to do what I can with whatever time the wife allows me while she's off work this week. Next week, though, may be much better. Maybe. :)

haha! you're the best glenalbrethsen..or is that the beast?
well it's not just the yard work although we have 15 acres and alot of cutting, trimming, thinning, landscaping, planting, mowing..it's not just getting the mower out and spending half a day. then there's other outside repairs and work but some of those could wait until it's not freaking 110 degrees out!

so yes, I've already cut back. I feel bad for noname because he really worked hard last week but when I said that I was thinking about stepping back last week I changed my mind and told most everyone ..at least I thought I did. because I started thinking how fun it would be to break that 1,000 comment mark so that's what I did.

I did slack off some but spent some late nights as well. It's hard to take off much because when you have a list of comments that you haven't gotten to what are you going to do? not answer them after working to develop relationships with those people?

I did really suck in one area last week though and that was in the number of different people I voted for, it said 47. that's pitiful, everyone had more than me. I mean it's frustrating to only have a certain number of votes until it makes no difference and you aren't helping anyone and I seem to be at that level alot. like right now my voting power is at 50%.

It's alot of fun, this contest thing but man, I really don't like people making it between you and I because I don't really want to compete with you and I just see you as the "real" writer and author. I just have fun and ask questions that's all. If someone did the math on how long the average length of our comments were, mine would look like a joke compared to yours! lol.

while you write about real ideas and concepts which are much of the time serious little mini books, I'm like asking someone what they do for a living or something like that! lol. no comparison. that's why I don't like the comparison thing. too bad your wife is off this week though.

Well, you and I are in the same boat when it comes to the comparisons, but if it makes people interested and do as much as they can do, that's great. It's when people feel discouraged because they don't have time to keep up is what I'm concerned about.

This isn't so much about who is the writer and who isn't. It's about the best engagers, and you, sir, are the best by far. Even if it's just asking questions, which I'd say is only one part of what you do, you still need to keep the conversation going.

And with this reply you just proved you can write more. Now, there's no hope whatsoever. :)

It's okay, though. Being the winner should be fun. We both have time to do it, and there are some others, too, so we just need to keep at it. Those of us who do have the time probably should be incorporating some of our commenting to spreading the word about the leagues. I think some do that regularly. I feel like I need to do it more.

You're just going to have to accept the lower SP and curation for the time being, unless you have something to invest or someone else comes along with a delegation. Even where I'm at, which isn't that high, it gets tough. I just flat out gave up voting on comments after the first or second one in a conversation late last week because I was running out of VP.

You do want to make an impact when you vote and you want to spread it out as far as you can. You just can't do both at lower SP, so you try to build up and work your way up. With the delegation you do have, it will help, but it is what is. I'm not sure where you need to be in order to be in a good place to spread upvotes around, but I don't think it's anywhere in minnow territory, which means there's a ways to go yet.

No Name will be okay. He's good at keeping in it as much as he can without getting too carried away. He must have had time to devote to it more than normal last week or he would have been off doing other things. As it is, he had the best week he's had, he said. But he's not one of the ones that has all day to work it like you and I do.

re: long list of comments

Yeah, so just think of what it's going to be like when you're a dolphin and have a rep in the mid to upper 60s and more and more people are commenting on your posts. Instead of a dozen or so, it becomes three dozen first level comments, and that list of replies is going to be nuts. Good thing is, you won't have to go too far to interact with folks. Bad thing is, you won't have to go far to interact with folks. Somehow, the balance still needs to be maintained.

And no way do you want to give up on the connections. They're going to be a part of what gets you where you want to go, just as you will be a part of theirs. I don't go all in on the "we're in it together" idea, but there's no denying that there is an interlocking going on. You can't have conversations by yourself. So, you want to keep engaging and hope they can and will, too.

re: yard work to do

I was thinking you wouldn't be doing it all in one day, or that you'd manage to get some time on Steemit, regardless, so you wouldn't be completely gone, and you would still have enough time to stay in the running. Where you're at right now, with the comments, if you keep the CL up, you don't need over 1,000 to keep first place, let alone in the Top 10. Only if you want to win by 18,000-plus points. :)

howdy Glen! I've been behind since yesterday when our internet was down twice for hours. I got two people to join the contest, smithlabs and mepatriot. do you know those guys? I don't think so at least if you saw their posts you rudely didn't comment on them! lol

smithlabs is amazing, one of the most brilliant, above genius level people I've ever met, electrical engineer, inventor, fabricator, manufacturer, herbalist, natural food guy, mechanic, designer, big companies hire him to trouble shoot problems, in fact if you get to know him I challenge you to come up with something that he doesn't know about. he has a photographic memory, he has coin colletions, gem collections, gun collections, he builds guns, I mean anything you can think of he's into or knows about. and he has a heart of gold and helps alot of people.

But I need to invite more people into the league too, I did a post on it and didn't get a single person interested.

Yeah I've been watching people like papa-pepper (77) and how he does his commenting to get an idea when I get alot of them on my posts. that does get to be a nice challenge. right now I'm way down in my commenting compared to last week.
thank you sir for all your words of wisdom!
has your wife wanted you to take off and do something this week?

She's been talking about making runs to stores—the outlet mall, Macy's, etc. There was some talk about the coast, too, but I'm not sure if that's happening or not. We've got the granddaughter to consider in all of this, too, and since she's just one, there's naps to take and only so much traveling she endures.

Papa Pepper is probably a good person to watch as far as comments go. He seems to be doing quite a lot of things outside of Steemit which then gives him material to put on Steemit. There will probably come a point where there's enough comments coming in that you just won't be able to get to them all. It's a good problem to have, really. :)

I have seen mepatriot and smithlabs commenting on things where you're concerned, either your posts or elsewhere. I think I did comment on something with smithlabs last week. Have not yet with mepatriot, but I will be because I've been trying to at least comment with others in the league once a week, if not much more. It just depends on if we connect and how well. :)

Smithlabs sounds like he's got a lot going, which makes me wonder why he's here :) while giving me some comfort that he is. He should never run out of material to post, or things to talk about. Being a jack of all trades, and maybe even a master in many, is a good place to be on Steemit. And if he's a good guy, too, well... even better. :)

You challenge me to come up with something he doesn't know, eh? Well, I think I'll wait on that for a while. If I do, though, it will probably be inadvertent, rather than on purpose. :)

Need to get that internet going. Is is suffering from heat fatigue? We have occasional outages here, but for the most Xfinity/Comcast does a good job.

And this is comment No. 5,000 for me. You're well past that, I see. I'm still acknowledging it here. :)

sir Glen! good day to ya sir. well I was thinking that if you won this week it would be good for the League and contest would it not? when I go to step back I then realize that I have this big list of people that I've tried to get some kind of relationship going with..and I can't just not answer them!

I am back down from last week, like yesterday I did 115 comments but last week I think I averaged 150 a day. so this is harder to cut back than I thought, plus I still have precious little time to come up with a decent post! lol.

yeah I've noticed that the big guys only comment on comments to their posts, I guess they don't have time to visit very many other's posts. Except papa-pepper, he never sleeps I don't think, puts out 4 or 5 posts a day and it's everyday life stuff that he's doing on his homestead, alot about plants and gardening, teaching all about that stuff. plus tons of animal things.

I don't understand your last sentence. I have no idea where to find this information so I'm always clueless about numbers. 5,000 comments from when?

I wonder about smithlabs also, he has so many ongoing projects that it boggles the mind,he literally hardly ever sleeps though, actually.
but everything I mention he's already done it, has it, made it, read it, ate it, wrote about it, researched it...it's just astounding. so good luck trying to stump him, let me know when you do, gotta happen sometime.

I still think authors are a cut above on here.
thank you sir for your thoughts!

Okay. 115 comments a day is still a decent amount. I got up to 71 yesterday, and that was after answering everyone mentioning me on the league results post, catching up with the replies since late Saturday night and then starting in on my feed. over the last several weeks, that represents the highest in a day I've done. My best is 90. So, you on a down day are still better by 25 comments what I am on my best day. :)

I don't know if it's best for you to back off. I did it because there was no one putting in the time I was, at least not to the extent I was. Now, you're here and so there's at least two of us running at it, and potentially more because of the newer faces.

Personally, I'd rather we were both running at full strength. Then, we have clear winners, rather than one stepping back. We've all got something we need to do and contend with, so whatever time there is that's what we dedicate to Steemit and the leagues.

I don't know how busy the bigger fish are. I guess it depends. I think some of them might be, others aren't, and others aren't even on regularly, because they've found something else to do. I don't know if I'd be able to keep up or not, but I'd like to think I would try. At this point, I don't really have a desire to attack this from some other way, like leasing delegation or some other form of passive income. I'd prefer to keep on writing.

If you bring up steemworld.org under your username, it will show you in the stat window how many comments and posts you have since you started. In my case, my 5,000 are from January 1 when I first started commenting. Yours would be from whenever you started.

No worries, glad to be providing something of 'use' and interest to many. And I've got no choice to stop now (which I don't want to of course), as @curie have just sponsored another 8 weeks with 200 STEEM. How awesome is that? :D

Congratulations on 3rd spot, well deserved. The boys are back in town it seems!

I think it would be interesting to know how many new people sign up each week. It seems like things have been growing. The list is the top 20% and seems to be increasing in length every week.

Glad to hear there's another 8 weeks. That's great!

Yo, @themanwithnoname. Yeah, well, it was more than a rumor. He said it. He decided to go after 1000 comments and basically obliterated it and everything else in the process. Can't help it if the guy uses the 111 degree weather as an excuse to avoid yard work. :)

He is saying he needs to do it this week, though, so I guess we'll see. Actually, I'm hoping he still makes a run for things, anyway. :)

You didn't have to mention how badly he beat me by, did you? Thanks man. Truth hurts, don't it? :)

I set a personal record for CL this week and in the past that's been more than enough to get me into first place, but then janton comes along and outdoes not only my best but sets the record for CL. Now he's got more SP to work with, too, so who knows what that's going to do for the upvote side of the equation.

I suppose we did give it the old college try. I've got the carpel tunnel to prove it, but I'm not taking on the loan debt :) It was a good week. I'm hoping for another one, depending on what my wife wants out of me while she's off from work. She's taking the whole week. And now that the 50,000 point mark has been decimated, I guess it's time to try for 100,000 points, right? What do you think? I probably should actually reach 50,000 before I go for the 100,000 points right? :)

You had a really good week. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Your CL was higher than it's ever been and your scores all seemed to be up. We just got outplayed.

Don't take on the loan debt with the carpal tunnel.

Do make sure to help your wife. Happy wife, happy life! There will always be next week.

I think that 50,000 is still in reach. I stretched and did some long comments back and forth with you to help get your CL up, but that wasn't enough this time. You need to get a solid comment buddy so you can just go for hours. We'll have to find one for you. I don't think I can be that guy. I don't have enough consistency in writing long comments.

Good luck this coming week!

I think the better idea would be to have 100 or more folks who will comment with me five or six times. That would seem to be spreading out more than just you and me or some other person. I appreciate the idea, though.

I converse with you because I find our conversations to be interesting, informational, fun and I really liked to do it. The CL and the comments become secondary to the actual conversation. I do thank you for helping me out, though. :) In that case, I was helping, you, too. :) And apparently, we both helped janton, which was probably as much our downfall as any this week. :) We're our own worst enemies. :)

Yeah, yeah. Happy wife, happy life. I've heard it. Problem is, nothing rhymes with husband. That's why it can't be the other way around. And even so, how could you compete with rhyming with life? Not fair.

I'm okay with the week I had. I'm glad to get the numbers up. I just don't like my second best showing overall being left in the dust, and I don't like having the CL record belonging to someone else. That one is where I live, man! :)
