RE: Renewable Energy: Correcting Some of the Myths

in #energy6 years ago

Very much enjoyed your article @energyaddict22!

I have a bit of first hand knowledge I would like to toss out.
I'm a

  • nuclear reactor operator
  • journeyman lineman
  • power plant operator
    • I worked at the Chillicothe MO power plant which includes five 2MW diesels and two 40MW combustion turbines that can be powered by either natural gas or diesel. These turbines are actually old fighter plane engines converted to generate electric. They were quite fun to fire up and put online!
  • Utility Superintendent of Rock Port, MO which was the first city to directly connect wind turbines to their distribution system.
    • And this is what I'd like to add to the discussion about.
      • The city didn't own the turbines.
      • The city didn't directly purchase the electricity. That was purchased through an agreement with MPUA.
      • The main savings to the city was a reduction of wheeling fees. Whatever the city could use while the turbines were generating would have zero wheeling fees. That was a good savings for the city.
    • The main problem noted by MPUA from a study a couple of years into the project was that wind turbines created electricity exactly opposite of when it is needed.
      • They create more during night when actually more is needed during the day.
      • They create more during spring and fall when actually more is needed summer and winter.
  • I also did a website for a guy who had a hydrogen fuel cell powered car. He actually wrote a book about it.
    • He holds many patents on hydrogen power and computers. He patented client-server networks. He created the first luggable computer. He created the first megabit ethernet over copper.
      • Anyway, in his book he pops the greenies bubble by saying yes, the hydrogen fuel cell car creates no pollution, only water, but the electric generation plants do pollute and that's how the car is recharged. The book has diagrams, charts and explanations.

So I said all that to say this...
I totally agree with your points made in this article.

  • Too bad it is too old for me to upvote it...

Thanks for posting it nonetheless. Now I have someone to reach out to when I need a quote or some specific info on the U.S. energy grid.
