When he became old enough to attend school, Kelly was sent to live with his grandparents for a more stable environment. And, when school was out for the summer, he returned to his parents and the circus. When Emmett finished school, World War II was being fought. At the age of 18 Kelly enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent almost three years in the Pacific participating in major operations in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Although he was raised "under the Big Top", he chose to pursue a career as an automotive mechanic and railroad switch tender after the war ended.
Fifteen years later, Kelly answered the call of circus life and clowning when he debuted at the 1960 Circus Festival in Peru, Indiana. There, for the first time, encouraged and trained by his father, he donned the "Weary Willie" costume and make-up and portrayed the lovable mime.
For the next four years, Emmett completed his informal apprenticeship under the watchful eye of not only his father, but also their manager, Leonard Green. Emmett toured the hinterland with a daredevil auto show "Austin's Motor Derby" frequently traveling through the night and arriving just hours before the next show would begin. In 1963 Emmett was the featured performer of the Hagen-Wallace Circus as it criss-crossed the United States.
In 1964, Eastman Kodak was looking for a suitable representative to appear at the company's Pavilion during the New York World's Fair. Emmett Kelly, Jr. met Eastman Kodak executives in their BoardRoom and wowed them with his mime performance. He was immediately signed up and became one of the top attractions during the World's Fair two year run. Kodak was so pleased and impressed by Emmett's success during The Fair, that they asked him to become a touring Ambassador of Goodwill for them. This relationship lasted for over four years during which Emmett visited thousands of towns and hospitals. It was during this six year period that Emmett, Jr. became America's most photographed and recognized clown.
Countless men, women, and children, including Jacqueline Kennedy, had their photographs taken with Kelly at both The Fair and at appearances nationwide.
Emmett Kelly, Jr.'s superb reputation for performance integrity and his commitment to charity work and hospital visits made him much in demand. By 1972, Kelly and his manager Leonard Green made the dream of the Emmett Kelly, Jr. Circus a reality. The Circus toured hundreds of cities and towns in America and performed twice at The White House -- the only circus to be so honored! The success of the traveling Circus led to television specials broadcast live from Las Vegas and featuring such stars as Anthony Newley, Loretta Swit, and Phyllis Diller.
In every performance, Emmett Kellly, Jr. presented the famous "Sweeping the Spotlight" routine which has become a pantomime classic.
Emmett Kelly, Jr. performed in public appearances nationwide until his death in 2006, at the age of 83. He spent approximately six months a year on tour throughout the country to promote various lines of merchandise, which bear his name and likeness.
Throughout his life, Emmett Kelly, Jr. donated his time to a number of charitable causes including The Make A Wish Foundation, The American Cancer Society, Save The Children Foundation, and FACES--The National Association for the Craniofacially Handicapped.
In his spare time, Kelly was an avid model train collector and racecar enthusiast. But his first love was always portraying the lovable character that millions of people have come to adore.

John F. Kennedy and Jackie were in Wisconsin for the Presidential Primary campaign in 1960. Wisconsin was an important state for them.
"Kennedy scored 476,000 votes to Hubert Humphrey’s 366,753 votes in the Wisconsin Primary that year. [It was] the only election John Kennedy won in Wisconsin. In the November general election, a majority of Wisconsin’s voters, and [the] state’s electoral votes, went to Richard Nixon."

As a clown, Emmett Kelly, Jr. continued the role of Wearie Willie, the endlessly inept hobo character developed by his father, Emmett Kelly, Sr. Willie represented the harsh days of the Depression, with his sad face and a big red nose swollen from hard luck and booze. "Willie's a guy who's lost his last friend but he, himself, always has one ray of hope left", explains Emmett Jr. Emmett uniquely expresses our greatest wishes and dreams - the dream of hope, the dream of love, the dream of laughter, the dream of kindness. Although he has continued the Wearie Willie personage, Junior added a new twist by merchandising products, which has propelled Emmett Kelly, Jr. to be one the big success stories in the collectible market.

But as a kid, I didn't know about electoral politics. For me, this photograph was associated with fortune (our family's brush with greatness) and also fear (my father went into politics too, and Kennedy's son John-John and I were nearly the same age).
I can tell you where I was on the day JFK was shot, and how I heard the news. And I can tell you what the following weeks felt like to a six-year-old girl in Northern Wisconsin during a dull November when all the adults around her were sad and a bit terrified. But I have an actual personal connection to JFK; a photograph that is treasured in my family. It's a picture of my paternal grandfather beaming impishly at Jackie Kennedy while John Kennedy beams at him with that famous grin. All of them are posed for the camera, and in the background you can discern a line of men patiently waiting to take their turn.
On that day 50 years ago, our school-day was interrupted by the principal's voice on the loudspeaker. She announced there was some news to share, and then put the radio close to the microphone. It was a weird moment, everyone looking around wondering what was going on. I recall a kind of desperation in the air. Then, apparently realizing that the radio sound was ineffective she interrupted to make the announcement herself. I'm pretty sure we all went home early. And then there were what seemed like weeks of watching a flag-draped coffin on TV.
My grandfather was a newspaper man in Northern Wisconsin. He founded, together with his brother Joe, the Merrill Daily Herald. Most of his family worked at the paper at some point in their childhood, so it was probably natural that my dad went into radio (he still has a great voice), and later television as the first news anchorman for northern Wisconsin. Later, dad added politics to the mix, serving for 24 years in the Wisconsin State Senate.
Photographs have a concrete quality. That moment took place. The physical reality of it is documented. There are those who could probably give me the names of all those barely visible people in the background.
But as is also typical of photographs, there's much that isn't known, or that I only half-know about that moment. And it's the ability to look at it, informed with knowledge from the passage of time and events that lends this otherwise minor moment larger meaning and significance.
The Kennedy event was a luncheon, or possibly a breakfast hosted by the paper my grandfather published. As a lifelong Republican, my grandfather might have felt that Kennedy was better company than his opponent, the more liberal Humphrey. The photo was most likely taken by a photographer for the Merrill Herald, though a cousin of mine wonders whether it might have been a photographer traveling with the Kennedys. Possible, since they were pretty media savvy people.
In the picture, my grandfather appears to just be turning from the encounter. He might have been nervous, maybe getting out of the way so as to give all those men behind him a chance for their own moment with this up-and-coming star. The Kennedys seem calm and gracious, a young political couple on the cusp of greatness.

Christina Haag, the woman JFK Jr. dated for five years during the latter 1980s, chronicles her relationship with him in her upcoming memoir, "Come to the Edge." The two met as teenagers growing up in Manhattan and became friends at Brown University, where they bonded over their shared love of acting. They started dating post-graduation after they were cast in the same New York play.
The April issue of Vanity Fair includes an excerpt from Haag's book about a trip to Jamaica that almost ended with the couple drowning in the Carribean. Below, seven of the most telling revelations from that excerpt:
As a teenager, Kennedy and his friends hurled paper towels stuffed with Noxzema out the window of his mother's 15th story Fifth Avenue apartment: "He darted back and forth, cracking himself up. Skinny, with hair in his face, he seemed younger than the rest. And he was really into throwing those Noxzema bombs. 'Nice one, Kennedy!' they'd yell."
He liked nicknames: "He called me Chief, and I called him King."
