in #educational6 years ago (edited)

Hello followers and fellow Steemians welcome to the review of the flag of Argentina! This is the 7th flag I will be covering in my series to cover most of the flags of the world! I hope you enjoy the ride and maybe you will also start to like flags a lot! just like me! I'm trying hard to get people from other vexillology communities into steemit but no success so far! Guess i'll just have to keep on trying!

The flag of Argentina is a triband flag composed of three equally wide horizontal bands, the top and bottom bands being celestial blue and the middle band being white. The flag was created by Manuel Belgrano and was first seen in February 27 of 1812 during the war of Argentine Independence against the Spanish empire. He decided to create this flag because both sides, the independentist and the loyalist were using the same yellow and red colors of Spain. The yellow Sun of May on the center was added to the flag in 1818.

Meanings

The blue color represents the freedom the Argentinian people where fighting for and the majestic skies above.

The white color represents the clouds in the sky.

The Sun of May represents the independence process that began on May 25th, 1810. The Sun of May is a figurative sun that represents Inti, the sun god of the Inca religion. It is called "of May" because its used to represent the May Revolution which took place in the week from the 18th of May to the 25th of May which marked the beginning of the Argentinian process of independence from the Spanish Empire.

Facts

  • "Argentina" comes from the latin word for silver argentum. The European settlers called the place like that because they believed it was full of silver, but it was not. The silver ended up being up north in Cerro Rico in Potosí, Bolivia.

  • Argentina is one the world's leading producers of wine since the 16th century. Its estimated that the country has more than 1,800 wineries today making it the world's fifth leading wine producer.

  • Argentina has the third biggest reserve of fresh water in the world. The water is located on the Perito Moreno glacier and its only one of the three glaciers in Argentina that is growing and not shrinking.

This is really interesting, I'd never really stopped to consider the history of flags from around the world, with the exception of the American and Mexican flags.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope you enjoy the future flags too :-D

Great idea to write about, I was into flags as a kid, and now you have rekindled my interest.
I hope you will cover Croatian flag at some point, we have lots of stories connected to it.
One of them might be myth (I haven't done in depth research) but according to the story in medieval history Croatian Coat of Arms changed depending on if Croatia was at war. If we were at war, the first square of our Coat of Arms was red, and if we were at peace, the first one was white.
At the moment first square is red because the flag with the first white was last used during fascist regime in WWII.

Thanks for reading! I'm going to write this down and keep it in mind when I'm doing my research for the Croatian flag!

Feel free to DM me on discord with any questions if you decide to do Croatian flag. The discord name is also tripdespider.

I will be doing the Croatian flag eventually, I'm slowly moving through the countries in alphabetical order! I will contact you for hands on research when the time for Croatia comes!

I will be glad to help :D

No, Im not crying... it's the powder

lol max, nice drugs reference at least you are safe saying this here because the Argentinian population of steemit is probably not that big but they would probably burn you alive if you said that in Buenos Aires.

Is that so? xD

Congratulations! This exceptional post has been featured in Episode 8 of The STEEM Engine Express Podcast. Click the link to hear what I had to say, and keep up the good work!

Amazing! Thanks for featuring my post :-D

GReat job Luna! I'm looking forward to your flag articles by the way. I always learn something new.

Seems like Argentina wasn't a free country back in the days, just like my country. The blue in my country though signifies peace, truth, and justice. ^^

I love learning new things too:-D I'm glad you came by and enjoyed the read. I'll be covering your country soon enough!

Don't worry would love to know more other countries. :)
