Some reasons to learn the Thai language

💕I'm writing more to myself, hoping I will finally start learning Thai properly. But I will be more than happy if some of you finds it useful or just entertaining.💕

How many of you have visited Thailand? How many of you fell in love with this beautiful country?

There might be different reasons to love the Land of Smiles. The gorgeous beaches, isolated islands, delicious food, cheap beer... The last one is the most important reason for many people, right? 😉

Anyway, you might have different intentions but it will be easier if you know the language. Right? Either you will get a smile or a discount, it will be a pleasant bonus to your trip!

3 reasons to learn Thai

My reasons are kind of language oriented. So let's start!

1. No conjugation of verbs

If you are a speaker of a conjugation system language you understand my excitement. 😉

If you learn German, French or Russian you know there might be so many different forms of a verb. You can change one according to number, tense, person, mood, gender, aspect, and voice.

I think it's already enough to give up.

Well, the Thai language doesn't have all of these. Alleluia!

2. No plural forms of nouns, no gender

Maybe it's not that huge if your native language is English. But for Russians and Germans who have to keep in mind all three genders it's kind of a relief.

For example, if you don't know that the word "girl" is grammatically neutral in the German language you will never guess.

One more example. The word "eye" in Russian is masculine, while in Ukrainian it is a neuter noun.

There is no sense. You can't understand why, you just need to learn the gender by heart.

3. No articles

This will be the heaven for those who struggle with der, die, das or el, la, une, le ...

Perhaps I'm talking about myself now:) It can be a real nightmare!

Do you notice Russian speakers tend to omit any articles? The thing is there is no such part speech in Russian at all. So don't be surprised! 😊

That's all for now.
💕 Hope you like it!💕

Tell me what language you want to learn and why. What interesting facts do you know about languages?

Yours,
Natasha

P.S. Many thanks to @cranium for the opportunity to be active again

Sort:

"El agua" always cracks me up. "El" is masculine, but "agua" seems like a feminine word. These Spanish are crazy, I tell you. Craaaaazzzzzzzzyyyyyyyyyyy!

I use Duolingo, too... I'm learning Russian! What an adventure!

I couldn't agree more. There is no way to understand why "agua" is masculine.

Well, we can practise together 😉

Neutral?

How can something have a neutral gender? Historically, the male gender has also been a neutral gender as well, in the English language, but also in other languages as well, for thousands of years, if not since the dawn of time.

Bible

For example, in the Bible, it will say, "Man shall not live by bread alone." So, the word "MAN" there means MANKIND or PEOPLE in general. In the past, MAN would mean people, and not just the male gender. In other words, MAN has been neutral in the past, for some languages, it would seem. In other words, MAN has been used to identify males and females.

Thai

Thai seems tough to learn but it does seem to be interesting. That is good. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for such an informative comment :) as usual 😊
