The Revelation - Have You Been A Good Kid ? I Hope You Didn'tsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #education7 years ago

What constitutes to being a good kid ?

You keep your bedroom tidy.
You brush your teeth for the full length of time.
You submit your homework on time.
Ultimately, if you have been an obedient kid, you are probably a good kid.

I did it, Ma !

What about the "Bad Kids" ?

Our society has targeted and labeled kids who do not fit the model above that is expected of them; deeming them unfit for the society.

This is precisely where the problem lies..

The root of being a "good kid" is the requirement of utmost compliance, making sure to obey every single instructions that is expected of them. This is the very definition, and essentially the problem of being a obedient, fun kid.

The "good kid" who fits this model is so, because they simply have no inclination of being something else; they are good because they have no other options.

Goodness then becomes a necessity, rather than a choice.

As the child grows up, the "good kid" is further repressed by their surroundings, receiving backlash at any sign of less than pleasant conduct. This causes the "good kid" to eventually be constantly satisfying their audiences, in hope of constantly meeting the expectation of his surrounding.

This means that he will have no luxury for any display of envy, greed, or any other bad traits as the society deem it. While the display of such expression is normally unwelcomed, the society tends to forget that kids often have desires too and they too must find a form of expression; in lieu of a bigger problem in the future.

This is a vital privilege that all child must have

As a result of all the repressed feelings, the kid grows up to a people pleaser, a master at fortifying their opinions deep within and going with the flow.

The habits formulated since infancy; following rule and avoid annoying anyone won't get the "good kid" very far in adulthood, much less in career. In life, anything interesting will surely be met with some degrees of opposition; while the "good kid" may have the best idea of a lifetime, he may not go ahead with it in fear of disappointing certain people.

The "good kid" is then destined to a lifetime of mediocrity just for meeting society's expectation.

Today, we must change our perception of branding kids if they are good or bad. Although the desire to be good, which steEms(yup) from deep within is one of the best traits human can have, but it is crucial to keep in touch with our inner self to maintain a balance between the two. In order to have a genuine life, we must accept that in order to be good, we must also bravely embrace the bad.

Great post

Thank you for your appreciation !

Great post.
It's about time we stop labeling kids and just embrace who they are so they stand a chance of achieving their full potential, unlike most of us, trying to find out who we truely are or living an unfulfilling life after losing that sense of self in our childhood.
All children are inherently good, it's us parents and caretakers that mess them up by trying to fit them into what is convenient for us rather than what serves the child's best interest.
In the end, the 'good' kid becomes messed up by the high expectations and the anxiety and pressure that comes with it, and the 'bad' kid is frowned upon and robbed of the knowledge that he IS indeed good.
What people tend to forget is that they are raising PEOPLE, not obedient servants. We are here to guide our children, not control or 'mold' them and we need to be increasingly conscious of the effects our words and actions have on them.

Yes !! I agree with you that the perception on method of treating people has to change ! No one is born to convenient us !

In my personal experience, there seems to have been a shift in the approach to 'normality' or - as you call it in this post - being a good or a bad kid. When I was a kid, I was just a kid. But judging by contemporary norms, I'm not entirely sure, I would have made the cut today, so to speak. It is indeed disturbing, and I sincerely believe we do ourselves a disservice. We will soon be paying the price in terms of declining innovation, imagination, etc.

I believe things were much more simpler back then.

It was great seeing you here !
