LIFE, QUESTIONS, FAMILY, CHILDREN, TEACHING, & SOME BEANS

in #education8 years ago

Life is an amazing experience, and sharing knowledge and information with others can be a very enjoyable activity.

I’ve learned a lot here on steemit, and I have also shared a lot of information, not just on the platform, but in my house. Though, back in the day, I never desired to be married or have children, all that eventually changed. Thankfully, I have embraced fatherhood and devote a lot of my life to focusing on teaching and training my @little-peppers. Just today we had an amazing and educational time down the pond, and Pinkie-Pepper even got to try her hand at some photography, which can be seen in the latest post from @little-peppers.

Since little children are so full of wonder and questions, there are always excellent teaching opportunities, if one is willing to take the time to teach. The amount of information that small children can retain and put into practice is amazing, and I am always blessed to see how the @little-peppers apply what they have learned.

I like teaching them to have a connection to the world around them, including their food source. Recently, with some questions from the little ones, we discussed how beans are actually seeds. We decided to check if the beans that we would normally eat were still active seeds.

The process was to test this was very simple. First, we took some beans out the bag.

Then we placed them on a damp paper towel.

Next we placed the damp paper towel inside a plastic bag.

By using this method, we can keep an eye on the beans. If we put them in the dirt, no one could see what was happening. We would just have to wait until something broke the surface, or not…

Before too long, our efforts were rewarded, and the beans were proven to still be good seeds.

Ideally, non-GMO, organic beans would be the best ones to grow. Then, we could harvest our own dried beans every fall to eat, and save some to grow the next year. However, for those who aren’t as concerned about non-GMO or organic food, it can still be a wise and rewarding effort to grow your own beans, or other foods.

By growing your own, you can control the chemicals that the plants are, or are not, exposed to as they grow. We plan on continuing to let our children experiment with things around them, and even entrust certain stewardship to them. They already are hard at work raising some animals, and they also have some gardening experience under their little belts.

Having quite a few @little-peppers is its own blessing, because they can all concentrate on different projects, or just apply a lot of work quickly to a certain project when needed. I’m glad that even something as simple as “beans are seeds” or “here is how to test if a seed is still good” are things that these little ones are already understanding and getting hands-on experience with.

These are not just things that they read in a book, or something that they were told. They saw that these things were true, and experienced them themselves.

Nice lesson! Now is a great time for anyone to test the viability of any of their old garden seeds, too. Even 10 seeds from an old package, tested the way you show, can let you know whether to plant the old seeds with confidence, order new seeds, or sow the old seeds more thickly. Here's to the fast germination of everyone's beans this gardening season!

Great post ! Those beans sprout up just as fast as children do !!! Enjoy every minute while you can !! 👭👪👍

I will, but be careful with statements like that... some people will not appreciate that and will probably down vote you.

Thank you. I will be careful from next time.
