Read about a summary on The CEO Next Door – The 4 Behaviors That Transform Ordinary People into World Class Leaders by Elena L. Botelho. In the book, the author looks into different cases of CEO getting fired by the company due to their suitability on the specific industry. No doubt that all the superstar CEO has their very own unique way to manage a company and they have experience in doing so. However, in many cases, the author mentioned that the CEO’s style of work may not be suitable in a certain industry that contradicts the norm. In the book, the author categorized four main characters of the CEO.

1 - Eagle type whereby the CEO possesses a lot of creative and entrepreneurial spirit and love industry that has a lot of changes like a tech company. The CEO has a great adaptivity skill and strong decision-making capability which enables to lead the company to a fast-growing pace. Tesla’s Elon Musk is the typical example of such type of CEO.

2 – High Functioning Working Machine type whereby the CEO is good at creating a super efficient streamline work procedure. This could optimize the company output and minimize the cost of production. In this case, most of the manufacturing company will have such a CEO in place to make sure the factory is in good hand.

3 – Fire Fighting Captain type is those CEO who possess strong negotiation skill in every level of application. The worse the company situation is, the stronger the force to urge them to perform and possess a high fighting spirit. This type of CEO thrives under pressure to handle a tough situation. I found that this type of CEO also share its trait with the Eagle type whereby they need to solve issues but in a more limited spectrum.

4 – The Dependable Shoulder type is those CEO who is more on the defence side. They are good at tackling issues and creating influence through human interaction. In most cases, reshuffle and restructure the internal management team is their style and listening is their virtue as well.

From all of the above, I found that not all CEO is perfect and all rounded. Like the Eagle type CEO is the exact opposite of The Dependable shoulder type whereby one is moving forward in full speed while the other is taking it gradual and steady. From here, I can see how I could learn from all these four CEO management styles and have myself position in a style I find most suitable for myself. This will be a long and hard learning curve but a fruitful one at the end of the road.
