Danger of Child Pornography : Think before you share your children cute pictures and family info on Steemit , Facebook , Instragram et al

in #education7 years ago (edited)

Our world is full of good and weird people roaming our streets  and online in search of innocent prey to take advantage of. Unfortunately, most people are addicted to sharing personal  pictures especially pictures of children -now dubbed  sharenting on social media sites . According to an article in The Telegraph , by the time the average child is five, its parents most have posted 1,500 pictures of him or her in social media sites. In addition,  Some of these pictures were shared by friends or family members ( without the parents’ consent )  who want to look cool with a cute little relative.

Importantly,  we adults have to ask ourselves if we invade children privacy by taking their pictures when they are playing, taking bath , sleeping or eating and uploading those pictures on Facebook, instagram , steemit or any other social media site ?  don’t you guys believe that children should have a voice and we should guide their privacy especially as they are vulnerable?  Below are some few points:

Pic source

  • Digitally Kidnapped and bullying : family members unknowingly upload funny pictures which might result to the child being bullied in school or kidnapped by criminals who accessed all personal informations online or even digitally kidnapped by sites like Instagram example :The Creepiest New Corner Of Instagram: Role-Playing With Stolen Baby Photos - Parents say it’s a form of digital kidnapping , however  Instagram  is not sure what to say see link here
  • Child Pornography : This is a serious case and its true of the dangers around us. An innocent Australian woman ,for example, shared her 8 year old daughter and nine month old son pictures on Facebook which later landed in the fantasies of some  perverts  in countless pornographic sites . Furthermore, Brittany Champagne (an American) came across her daughter’s picture on someone else’s profile-claiming to be an 11 year old bisexual cheerleader. Most worryingly, her disbelief turned to horror when she learnt that eleven porn sites were also hash tagged onto the post. Her little girl’s photo, as well as her pictures (Brittany) and her nine-month-old son were everywhere-see link for more          source
  • Negative Emotions: some children will certainly not like it when they grow up and see their childhood pictures on Facebook or any other social media sites even if they didn’t express discontent as a child . One example is a 18 years old Australian lady who sued her parents in order to force them to remove her childhood pictures on Facebook –she indicated that her parents knew no shame and didn’t care if she was lying necked or sitting in the toilet-every moment was photographed and shared on social media sites . Do you agree with here action?

Conclusion: Social media has its advantages, however every good thing has downside especially with regards to the most vulnerable members of our community. As adults , we should try our best to protect children privacy and one way is to be careful of  : what we , our friends or members of our family share on social media sites because not doing so, might lead to an unpleasant situation.

        What do you guys think?

• Good point, I agree with you and will resteem in order for others to read and learn

• I agree with your analysis but steemit is different, therefore I will share here

@charles1  Stop writing nonsense; I do not agree with your analysis-in fact, I will continue sharing cute pictures of family members on  Facebook  and Instagram

Its certainly important to respect the kids privacy. I think fb and other "social" networks encourage this naive behavior, and I am glad that the voices on Steemit are different.

Good point, I agree. Hopefully people will learn and act accordingly

We need to be sooooo careful in this digital day and age of social media EXTRAVAGANZA !!! Also big brother is watching , and there's cameras everywhere ! We don't know what kind of sickos are out there ( and there's plenty !) I would never share my kids pictures on social media , im just glad my sons are now 27 and 30 , and no grand kids yet . Just the thought of it makes me sick !!! They should all be strung up by the balls and beat on by the mothers !! Haha ! And on that note : GOOD NIGHT AGAIN ! LOL! 😴😴😴😴

Thanks foryour comment, I agree with you and sleep well.

Your welcome!😴😴😴 im sleep typing LOL! Back to sleep ,zzzzzzz!

Great, hope you are strong and fit now...

All is well my friend !! 😍💕👍

which might result to the child being bullied in school or kidnapped by criminals who accessed all personal informations online or even digitally kidnapped

These, to me, seem to be the only solid concerns here. Each one can be evaluated statistically using actual data to figure out the probabilities of them happening. For me, personally, my kids are schooled at home (strike 1), the likelihood of kidnapping is statistically low where I live and the data on where we live is public anyway, regardless of what we post (strike 2), and the concept of being "digitally kidnapped" is kind of silly to me as everything shared online is no longer controlled by you unless it's fully encrypted so this is just an expectation problem (strike 3).

As to child pornography, why would parents be sharing pictures like that anyway? I share everything publicly and openly because I feel my expectations are aligned with reality. If someone were to misuse content I posted in a way that decreases my wellbeing or the wellbeing of my family, I would adjust my actions accordingly. That has yet to happen, and I've only positively benefitted by having memories online.

As my kids get older, I definitely take into account their consent when taking videos or pictures. Often, they are the ones asking me to do so. When they are younger and can't give consent, I'm okay with using my best judgement because they are my responsibility in every other way as well (feeding, clothing, cleaning, etc). If they ever had to sue me to respect their wishes regarding photos of them online, I'd argue our relationship was already pretty trashy to begin with.

I think "news" sites like to dramatize and sensationalize statistical outliers in order to create fear in people which gets them more clicks as fear is a powerful (but in my opinion, destructive) motivator.

@lukestokes good point, hence why I wanted you to send in your thoughts. People will always share cute pictures of their loved ones and its ok. However we should be careful what type of pictures we share with the world and where we share it.

Yes, it even bothers me when just local news media people show their children's faces on
TV, because I thought about how some actors usually hide their children's faces. Much of the reporters are disrespectful to the privacy of famous people with their bright flashing lights. As you've mentioned in your article about safety and security of your children,
Way too many nut cases about.
I wouldn't let my kids around even certain ones in the entertainment and political field, especially the the ones way too often touchy feely. Old creepy Joe Biden for example in this
Video :

Then this link is where Jeff Sessions swats Joe's hand away from his granddaughter

Btw, the socalled pizza gate matter isnt over with either.

hahaha good point @parcke we have to be careful and protect our children

I agree with yourself here @lukestokes .. I have and am sharing photos of my Son online. I can completely understand where @charles1 is coming from and it is a very scary world out there. But I believe that as long as you aren't posting in-appropriate content, then there is no harm caused. I see it that I am proud of my beautiful son and like to share my pride and joy with others. Like yourself @lukestokes , until I am personally attacked with misuse of my content, I will continue :-)

Well said, Thanks for taking the time to contribute intelligent and responsible perspective.

Good post sir.
Reasoned and rational. We need more of this kind of exchange, and less emotive fear mongering

Good point, I agree. Better be careful than regret it

HI @charles1,

I do strongly believe your idea. There are many many cases these days because of the pictures that we expose, knowingly and unknowingly. When it comes to our children, we much be very careful.

Thanks for the awareness.
