Homeworks increase student conscientiousness

Homeworks have a positive impact on children's personality and increase their awareness.

A recent German medical study said homework positively affects student personality, boosting the information they received on their school day.

The study, conducted at the University of Tübingen in Germany and published in this month's issue of the Journal of Research in Personality, that homework has a positive impact on the personality of children, and helps them to become more conscientious.

"Our results show that homework is not only related to school performance, but also to personal development, provided students do a lot of work," said university professor of psychology Richard Göllner in a press release.

During the study, the German researchers analyzed data from more than 2,760 students, starting from the transition from the fourth to the fifth grade, and then annually for the next three years.

Students answered questions about how well they were doing their homework and valued their efforts.

The researchers found that students who invested more time and effort in their homework between grades 5 and 8 had higher skills, concluding that careful attention to these duties could offset the temporary decline in academic competence they face.

"We need to define more accurately what expectations we have of the role and potential of homework and how these expectations can be met," said Ulrich Trautwein, director of research at Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology at the University of Tübingen.
