STEEMIT, Is EDUCATION headed for a REVOLUTION?

I recently stumbled upon an article entitled What if you didn't need money or attention?, by Derek Sivers. Having always felt like the black sheep and the odd man out of society, I found myself agreeing with everything I was reading. In fact, I don’t believe couldn’t have written it better myself.

This article basically states that, if you working in a job that you despise, or are working in an organisation that, who’s values and vision you simply don't really believe in… not only will you always be yearning for more purpose and fulfilment, but you’re also doing the Universe a disservice. If you're simply doing it for money, because you feel financial trapped, or for attention because you think it will help you possibly be more popular in your field… not because you actually whole heartedly care, or love doing what you do. or believe in the difference you’re making… You will never feel whole or satisfied. You will never be at piece in your day to day life.

Let’s shift our attention to the topic of education for a moment, shall we. Why do send our kids go to school? To learn what? We also do so because we feel they have to. We do so because it's expected, because everyone else does it, because they they’ve been told they need to get that degree in order to be succesful, because school is the stepping stone to getting a job. Don’t get me wrong, I am not attack the idea of education and the development of intellect. I’m simply raising the question of whether we are doing so in a way the is most beneficial to our species, our home we call Earth, and all it’s other inhabitants. Is there any evidence that the current model is functional and should stay the course? In my opinion, it really depends on the angle of perspective. Sure, if we look into the past, we’ll see the importance of old models being of great value to our societies. But at what point do we let go of the past and embrace the signs of a better future? Let’s not forget that forty-hour work week is a twentieth century creation; invented and implemented in the time of the industrial revolution to benefit the dreams and visions of only a few; well before the birth of many modern technologies, including the internet and computing.

Is it possible that our educational systems shape the minds of the individuals to fall into a psychological trap, consequently creating a workforce that subconsciously feeds off the comfort of its own limitations? With the momentum of the internet, the exponential growth of technology and automation, our human consciousness awakening, and massive revolutionary actions of startups and entrepreneurs worldwide; could we be on the cusp of a educational system revolution, which consequently reshapes the definition of expressions such as “college degree” and “job”.
It’s obvious that something in the world must and will change. We know this because we are still destroying our planet for its finite resources, the illness and disease are still relevant, famine and malnutrition are still a thing. Countries and religions are still at war… I’m not attempting to bum you out. I’m simply stating that we still have a long way to go; we can implement fundamental systems that shape a better tomorrow. I personally believe that one of those “systems” is the shedding of the belief that grades and degrees should be of most importance to the young minds of the future.

Let’s call it UnSchooling. Call it whatever the fuck you want. The reality is that the tools for a better world are already here. We simply have to encourage and influence the younger generation to find the time to reflect on what’s important to them, and create system that help them feel empowered. Perhaps we should begin by showing them that, for generations, the world has been shaped by people no more intelligent than you and me. They simply believed they could do it.

What if we taught our kids the difference between an “end goal” and a “means goal”? What if we taught them the concept of reverse-engineering to their goals; beginning with the end in mind? What if we encouraged them to learn, not because of a forced linear path, but instead, to find answers to the questions that are most important to their own set of values?
If we teach this mindset as the new education model to the new generation, they'll live their lives and behave into adulthood.
Talk about cutting out the bullshit…

What are your thoughts?

You're right. We need to start thinking differently and learning differently. I've quit a few good paying jobs because I didn't believe in the leadership. I never look back. Our old systems are out of date, often redundant and only with fresh thinking can we evolve.
