The Trees Saved My Heart: ๐ŸŒฟ The Wisdom of Tree Ogham ๐ŸŒฟ

in #ecotrain โ€ข 7 years ago

When I first moved to England I literally felt uprooted, as I had been violently torn from my Australian country and its eucaplyt oiled air and trees that sprung majestically from ancient soils in this continent so far removed from Europe.

Whilst being pulled toward ancestral lands in Britain and having wrapped my limbs around my true love, an Englishman of the woods and valleys, I needed a way to connect. Immediately I was drawn to the sacredness of the trees there, having heard of dryads or tree spirits that dwelt there.

When we are stricken and cannot bear our lives any longer, then a tree has something to say to us: Be still! Be still! Look at me! Life is not easy, life is not difficult. Those are childish thoughts. Let God speak within you, and your thoughts will grow silent. You are anxious because your path leads away from mother and home. But every step and every day lead you back again to the mother. Home is neither here nor there. Home is within you, or home is nowhere at all - Hermann Hesse

Besides being homesick and lost, I was so desperately sad for a reason I couldn't quite put my finger on. I would walk for hours, as if the woods were my church, only assuaged by sweep of wind and nod of branches, sting of nettle and tear of bramble. With J, I would feel more comforted, as he was teaching me the lore of the land and I would be more drawn out of my gloomier thoughts.

And thus I knew that it was the trees that would be my hearts balm.

I recognised them as powerful symbols, of course:

'...A tree is one of the best examples of a motif that often appears in dreams (and elsewhere) and that can have an incredible variety of meanings. It might symbolise evolution, physical growth, or psychological maturation; death (Christโ€™s crucifixion on the tree); it might be a phallic symbol; it might be a great deal more. And such other common dream motifs as the cross or the lingam can also have a vast array of symbolic meanings...' โ€“ Man and his Symbols by Carl Jung

But what did they mean to me? As I said, I knew they had spirits, a dryad that was the higher 'self' of the tree, a kind of sensed energy field that, if we are reverent and respectful, can impart many wisdoms to us. It is said that...

...after the connection to the dryad spirit, this person ascends to spiritual enlightenment by facing a tree which they are naturally drawn to. The dryad will help guide them insisting that they close their eyes taking a deep breath to release their tensions. After their mind is at ease, their soul is set free connecting to a zen-like experience

... and then I found a book on the Tree Ogham.

The Ogham alphabet was likely 5th or 6th century pre Celtic in origin. It consists of twenty-five simple strokes centred on or branching off a central line, and were written on wood or stones. Like runes, it was a language of symbols, often found on old stones and wood.

Even reading the Ogham was likened to climbing a tree:

This is their number: there are five groups of Ogham and each group has five letters, and each of them has from one to five scores, and their orientations distinguish them. Their orientations are: right of the stemline, left of the stemline, around the stemline, through the stemline, across the stemline. Ogham is climbed (i.e. read) as a tree is climbed, i.e. treading on the root of the tree first with oneโ€™s right hand before and oneโ€™s left hand last. After that it is across it and against it and through it and around it.โ€

The tree Ogham gave the names of trees to the individual letters. About 8 of the original letter names were give to the trees. Some say the tree Ogham was used as a calendar by the druids although no one is entirely sure if this was the case.

It was Glennie Kindreds self published books about the tree ogham and the tree spirits that guided me out of my depression. As I read about the lore, medicine and magick of trees I felt the landscape drawing me into it's embrace. I'd walk for miles, up Glastonbury Tor and past Og Magog, the two old oak trees with their gnarled bodies like arthritic elders, up tussocks where I begged for council from Old Man blackthorn , respectfully, and past chalk bottomed rivers where trout splashed and ash trees bowed their heads to the water. I passed dark and gloomy groves with shiny leafed holly, over stiles where yew towered, giggled with my boy under mischievous apple trees in the sunshine, gathered gorse blossoms for tea.

With reverence and care I'd ask the trees for their wisdom, reading Kindred's book and considering what lessons each tree had for me. Each tree meditation would take at least a week until I'd fully embraced the tender messages within. Sometimes the trees would shrug me off and I'd continue up hill and down dale until one called to me and I'd sit at the base and ask for a small piece to carve an ogham stick. I'd then spend days whittling and sanding and writing the ogham on the stick, thinking about what the tree represented and what I could learn from it. I would write the sacred and ancient letter onto the twig and clasp it like a rosary bead, reverent and connecting to the divinity of nature.

And so these ancient lessons from the trees seeped into my soul, and somehow lifted me out of the fog that had surrounded me.

Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life - Hesse

And my heart lightened, and I felt free of the longing for my home thousands of miles away. Through tree wisdom I leant that I could find the home within me so the home outside me was also a place of my heart.

So entwined did I become with English trees that the reverse happened when I came back down under, how I cried for ash and willow, blackthorn and oak. But that's another story.

What spiritual relationships have you had with trees? I would love to hear your stories.

I would love to walk with you and learn about trees and ogham and dryads and tree spirits and dwellers.

I would go for a walk in the eco trails we have around our city and trees keep me company, towering over me, watching over me. I admire them as I walk. Sadly, pine trees are being attacked by some sort of fungus which is killing them. No more scent of pine trees and cool air as before. I remember when I was a kid our school has a tree planting program and we do that every year. I wonder if those trees ever survived.

That's sad about the pine trees. Is anything being planted to replace them? I hope the school plantings survived!! It would be interesting to find out. I highly recommend getting her books if you're interested in tree ogham. They are beautiful pieces of art in themselves!!

Not that I am aware of but I hope there are trees planted in place of them.

OT: How did you do the aligned left pictures with words below them? I align photos left/right and wrap text.

So it looks like this - this should work? I'm no expert - just an experimenter until it works...

Thanks @riverflows! I will try that later on. I am fine with align left or right but it would be nice to try somethng else. ๐Ÿ˜†

Yeah i know right?? <> with hr in the middle makes a line too ;) xx

I didn't read this right away. I think it's better to have a line in the middle. I will do that next time :D

Check you out with your awesome posts :) I need to get me something posh like a giffy thingy whatever they are called !
Beautiful writing and experience you had there, I found that old alphabet amazing!

Ahaha posh!!! Thanks babe. Thanks for the compliment. Yeah how cool is the ogham!!! Amd they arent even really sure about it either..but i love how it was adopted and built upon by people like Graves and Kindred.

Nice post and good thoughts! I identify with your story, as I too find myself far from my land. But here, in the nature and landscapes of Brazil, I found my energy and I try to transmit it, through my photos to those who need it, to all of you. If you want take a look at my work, I would be very pleased, everyone is welcome, a hug.

Will do and thanks for your sweet comment ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›

This is so beautiful @riverflows. I really resonate with moving, feeling uprooted and also experiencing a deeply healing connection with trees. The quote from Hesse you included gave me chills, this is exactly how I would describe my relationship with trees, and all of the natural world really. At the end of your post you mention helping earth and humanity and invite us to ask questions. I would love to help and learn more about the communities here and what you're all doing. I am very new to this platform but was already given a lot of wonderful information by @mountainjewel (thank you so much!), that's how I found my way to the #ecotrain thread. What are the #ecotrain and #tribesteemup trails? And what is autovoting? How would I get involved in this?

Hey lovely!!! Are you on discord? We can chat there??

And omg the Hesse quote is sooooo good isnt it???

Be happy to help โคโคโค

Thank you so much @riverflows, I'd love to chat! I started a discord account to join the groups I was invited to here on Steemit but I'm still not very familiar with it. Do you send me an invitation or something? I look forward to connecting. ๐Ÿ’–

Whats your discord name? Xx

Oh I love this, just yesterday I went with my daughters to the history museum in Dublin and we were looking at ancient rocks with Ogham carvings on them. It was one of the high lights for me.
Trees are our elders, there is nothing better for me that being in the presence of trees and connecting with them, reaching out and touching them. They have always been my main healers in my life, ever since I was a child, I have always felt safe amongst them and they are where I wish to be when i need to take time for me, when I need to recharge. They give us so much. I love the pictures that Glennie draws, she really has a talent for capturing the spirit of each tree. I planted a hawthorn tree for my first daughter with her placenta, as the hawthorn is her birth tree. It is so magical to see them everywhere now that I am back in Ireland, that and the elder as they are in flower at the moment. I am really happy to be back amongst these strong trees of knowledge and heart. You have inspired me, I might have to write some more.
Oh the power of trees xxx

Oh Jamie is hawthorn and I am Ivy!! Her books are ssooooo beautiful. Thats so gorgeous you planted the placenta under one. I do miss the hawthorn. You must be loving being near your ancestral trees. I am missing elder a lot...we planted 3 here but they arent as infused with magick as the hedgerowed and wild ones in the UK and now are bare of leaves. Still they occupy a special place in our garden. Say hello to the trees for me!! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’› that is amazing... i wonder if I were writing this at the same time you were in the museum???

gosh this is amazing. what a work of art this post is!!! i love the ancient symbols tied into your healing and trees! gah trees! where to even begin. trees have saved me too and if i didn't already feel so so connected with you, this just drove the point home even further...

trees energy has healed me so many times. talked to me, taught me. re-membered me, re-minded me, re-freshened me... so much to say and see near a tree... since i was a girl the trees were my friends, they healed me and homed me up in their branches... and as a woman they do the same. thanks for this re-membrance and connection <3

Oh scccchweeeetheart! Work of art haha... but thanks!! Taught, 'membered, 'minded', 'freshened - oh yes. It's amazing how we can feel such connection to these beautiful creatures. And no wonder we feel the presence of dryads - it's a tree spirit manifest into a being we can understand!

Oh what a beautiful post! When I was young I lived in an agricultural area. Very flat with few trees other than orchards and such. Whenever we drove through forests on a road trip I would breathe deeply and just try to take it all in. When I finally moved to the foothills just 7 years ago, I would catch myself almost daydreaming whenever I hadto drive to town, so caught up in the beauty. 3 years ago we finally moved to an area that feels so deep in the forest and it soothes my soul. I see only trees out my windows and it calms me.

All that said, I am at the moment returning home from a road trip to our old hometown in California and now realize how much I miss my home in the woods. I rarely have alone time or down time with homeschooling 4 kids, but I think sitting with the trees needs to be part of our summer activities. Thanks for the inspiration, sister! Much love!!โค๏ธ

Ah I could see that as an amazing summer activity!! I wonder what spirits the kids would see in the trees and whether they could intuit it. I remember doing one of the apple ogham sticks with my boy - he must have been about 7 and was home from school which is why I was meditating on the apple with him. We'd found a wild apple and I was telling him about the spirit of the apple and how it's meant to have a kinda sense of humour - then we both got the giggles and were rolling around under the tree in FITS OF LAUGHTER. He looked at me and said 'Mum, I think you're right - apple trees ARE funny!!' and it is the sweetest memory!!!

People are also like trees :)

Indeed @movingman... there's a post for ya. It was the trees that gave me answers tho.. well, meditation on them ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟxxx I wonder what tree you are?

i think im a french oak as that's my favorite to use for inside a house when i do a renovation lol

im relieved that you do know it was the act of meditation that was the real magic :) tree's though obviously are spirits, the have spoke to me after eating a cactus!

Haha... yes trees can get noisy when you ingest the wild things!!!!!

I would walk for hours, as if the woods were my church

I get this. Trees have always been my solace. So glad you found something that helped you feel rooted. ๐Ÿ’–

I'm sure I saw a pic of you up a tree or hugging a tree - was that you? xx sorry - I visit and chat with so many people in my week!! Thanks for stopping by lovely xxx

Beautiful written. I also feel very connected with trees. I feel calm and in peace while being surrounded with trees in nature. I used to climb in trees a lot when I was younger. I loved sitting up there and see the world from another perspective.

Thanks lovely. Yes it's so lovely to see so many of us connected to trees! Interestingly, mainly woman... ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

Thats interesting!! Why is that?
