RE: Now I Really Know It's Spring! My Wednesday Walk...

in #ecotrain5 years ago

Weather cannot make up it's mind, never heard of that tree are those seeds or fresh leaves?

One walk with frogs chanting for you the next smothered in white powdery snow again... Yup upside down, that is Mother Nature for you.

Thanks for a lovely walk.

Those trees are a poplar or sometimes called an aspen and it's the catkins on the tree that open before the leaves.

This is interesting, not having the tree, not aware of it's cycle.

What are catkins on aspen trees?
Aspen produces small flowers, on catkins that are 1-2 inches long. These flowers are produced in the early spring before the leaves grow on the trees. Aspen is dioecious, with male and female flowers normally borne on separate trees. (Google search)

We have trees that do similar, not to this extent. Other trees or small bushes the tips go bright red/orange before the leaves unfurl. Your aspen's catkins makes for a very unusual display.

Yes it is quite a spectacular display and when they fall off it makes it look like there is snow on the ground because they are so thick in some spots!
That would be beautiful to have the red tips!
