Finding Home: Off-grid Adventures ~ Part 2, The Lodge

in #ecotrain6 years ago (edited)

This is part 2 of a special series of posts about my family's off-grid adventures. The place that we stayed in was too beautiful and Eco friendly to not write about. It has inspired our future build and as much as this is a post to the Steemit Community, it will also act as a kind of reference point for me too.

We had intended to sleep in our tent for the duration of the stay, but were offered a beautiful home to stay in, affectionately known as 'The Lodge'. A beautiful tiny home nestled into a terrace, straw bale and wood walls, finished with a rustic render. From the outside, you can hardly tell that it is there.

The back supporting wall is made from local stone that has been harvested from the surrounding area by hand. It makes a beatiful feature and the cost of this was practically free, albeit the labor and the cement. This wall has been constructed against the terrace and acts as the main support for the roof beams to the rear of the property. There's even a handy nook to place books!

The roof is made from 6 x 4 timber beams which were bought. ( I think these were the only new expense) The rest of the wood on the roof came from used pallets.

Externally, the roof is lined with a waterproof membrane layer. The top is covered in earth to hep insulate. Our intention is to do the same but to add plants such as succulents to make it a green roof which will help stop erosion of the soil during periods of rain. That one solar panel operates the lights and the water pump. You can also see the flue for the log burner poking up through there too.

Internally the other walls are rendered in plaster and finished in whitewash. There are some beautiful mosaics that the owners have crafted. @riverflows when I saw the dragonfly in the bathroom, I immediately thought of you!

The wood flooring comes from pallets and tiles that were all reclaimed at a local rubbish tip/dump. That center beam is from a dead tree from the land. It has been treated and makes a beautiful feature in the house, as well as acting as a support.

The front and side walls of the house are straw bale construction. The straw acts as a great insulator keeping the house cool in the intense heat. I've been told that it helps retain the warmth in winter too.
Originally rendered in a lime mix, the lime doesn't fare well in the intense heat of the Spanish climate so unfortunately it has to be a cement render.

The front wall needed some repair and as a way of saying thank you to the owners for gifting us with this beautiful place to stay we decided to repair it. It was also a very valuable skill to learn how to do. Neither my partner nor myself have any heavy building experience. DIY jobs within the house and a few things in our garden were about as far as our labor skills go. So the opportunity that presented itself worked well for all involved. Even my 13 year old daughter got in on the act and I must say her finishing skills are amazing! Even our professionally rendered exterior walls at home don't look as smooth!

My partner even added some more pathways on the most common routes in and out of the house.

The water tank is a 1000 liter cube that can be refilled when needed.

Lastly, no off-grid home would be complete without a compost toilet. This one is a hole dug in the ground, with a box and toilet seat placed over. It's still a work in progress but the views when you are using it are great!

We had a really comfortable stay here. We decided that we are going to create something very similar when we build our own property. If you have any hints or tips to help us out especially to help us find a cost efficient and Eco friendly exterior render, please leave them in the comments.

In the next post...

No beaches nearby but there is an amazing lake. Stay tuned!

Wow this is amazing! I'm chuffed you thought of me in Spain. That's so cool. Love the place - it's gorgeous!!! I'd love to live in a place like that. It looks so comforting and peaceful. The mosaics look beautiful. No pictures of you rendering then?? What a great thing to do. I'd say that compost toilet might need a little bit more work, huh?

Aww you're welcome. As soon as I saw the mosaics I rembered your dragonfly post. I did do a little but my daughter has the pics haha... better to hide away lol. Yes agreed the toilet certainly needs more work. Hopefully the family moving in there will make it amazing! xx

I LOVE this place!! So awesome; where was it? It really is a great place to mimic for your own one day!

It Is lovely isn't It? It's in Spain and yes the design of ours is going to be very similar. 🤗❤

It really is! It will be awesome when your in yours :)

Wow this is awesome! To be able to experience a straw bale home is something I have really wanted to do. Glad to read the straw is a great insulator to keep the house cool from the intense heat. It's not fair that we didn't get to see the author of the post :-) Your daughter really did a great job smoothing the whole thing out. You might want to hire her to help you build your own!

Thank you beautiful xx If you ever get the chance you should try and build one on your beautiful homestead as a guesthouse or something.
As for the pics, it's only fair hubby and my daughter get the credit for the work as I did a very minimal amount of work that day. I'll ask my daughter for the pic she took and send you though haha 😂. 💗💗💗💗

yes yes! I also thought of @riverflows when I saw that dragonfly in the bathroom :-)

I am thinking a lot about off grid living since started on Steemit. This is all so cool. I am so excited for you and your family! Oh, and I am glad you are back. WE HAVE MISSED YOU!

Offgrid is certainly the way to go! Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I've missed you too 💖💖

super cool! great to see some folk doing the work!
Amazing what you can do with just One solar panel these days!

you asked about rendering..
there are SO many options.. Lets assume you want a low maintenance option.. if you are Ok with using just 10% cement then i highly reccommend using 80% sand, 10% brown soil and 10% cement. This dries fast with curing, and sets and last a LONG Long time. It looks like a regular mud finish due to the sand and soil..

If you dont want to use ANY cement you can do it with a lime render.. but that needs more skilled workers and a source of limestone of course!

if you have amazing clay rich soil you can mix with sand and just use that.. then seal well with something .. again many options but i used linseed oil which was effective if a bit costly...

hope that helps! onwards! <3

Thank you and hahah yes hubby and my daughter did most of it. I did do about 1/3 of the wall 🤔😁.
That's a 100w panel on there. We've ordered 6 x 250w panels to cover our needs. Can't wait. There's so much to learn.
The lime render didn't work over the straw bale the heat just made it crumble. Clay sounds like a good option which I will look into. Thank you for your suggestions @eco-alex. Xx

ahh its going on straw! In that case best to get some chicken mesh and nail it onto the bales... nice n tight .. then the clay will hold and it wont crack or crumble nearly as easily.. clay will crack less, but adding sand prevents cracking,,. also a bit of chopped hay helps. . thats good to remember.. so it all depends on your soil really..
have fun!

Yes we were thinking mesh would be a good idea. Do you think it would be wise to use the mesh on the inside of the house too to help the plaster hold? I noticed that some of the walls were crumbling internally too. And do you have any eco friendly plaster solutions that will give a relatively smooth finish? 🤔😊😊😊

absolutely.. mesh is SO Worth it.. and stops a lot of problems with less then perfect rendering,, which is an artform!

if you want it smooth just filter the soil and or sand and or anything u use first through the finest mesh you can get your hands on. It takes ages but you don't need much for that final layer.. then put a couple of very thin coats.. u can rub it once it's nearly dry with a mister and a sponge to really make it super smooth. Then when totally dry seal it so it wont get dusty and stained.. i love linseed but you can use one of many things...

That's awesome thank you for your advice. Will certainly be trying a few of these suggestions. 😊😊❤

You are giving to your children great experiences, love your interest in repair some things as a great form of payment, that tells a lot about "soul quality" in you and your family.

Thank you for your kind comment and yes I'm really pleased that my dauhhter learned a valuable skill. X

I am so happy @jaynie shared this post in her favorite steemitbloggers' post today, or I would have missed it.

ABSOLUTELY love this little place! And yes... you're right.. from the outside you can barely see it. The perfect privacy location.

Looking forward to the next post about the lake.

Thank you for letting me know @jaynie featured my post. Ginabot hasn't been notifying me and I'm so busy that I've hardly had time to respond let alone interact.
It is a lovely place eh. I was blown away by the contrast between outside and in. I'm glad you enjoyed and thank you for recommending the post to be featured by @ghscollective ❤❤

Looks like an amazing place, no doubt! I love dragonflies, so that mosaic mural is wonderful! Thanks for sharing this charming adventure with #steemitbloggers 😊

Great post, i researched earthship homes a while back. Would be awesome to have a cabin like that, but i live in Norway so got do dig deep to keep warm in winters, or maybe just have it as an retreet for the summer vacation :) I am following you, want to see this progress, keep up the good work.

Thank you for the follow and lovely comment. There are alternative eco homes that you can build in colder climates. I can't think of the name off the top of my head but there is a style of home thay is built into the ground and uses the natural geology for heating and cooling. 😊
