Indonesian taditional natural remedy for mosquitos bites

Right now I'm staying in a northern lombok village in Indonesia. I was invited by my friend Adi who is presenting this video about a traditional and natural remedy to sooth itchy mosquito bites. I've been using the paste today and has been soothing the bites a lot.

He calls the herb he uses in local language 'imba' in Indonesian 'Daun Mimba' biological name azadirachta indica known as Neem in English. This is ground with tumeric and a little salt.

Adi is very passionate about sharing his culture with foreigners and tourists. This is one of the reasons he has invited me here to Bayan region on Lombok, to help him create videos about his local culture and also to work on some ideas to boost income for his community.

The posts we make about Adi and his community will go towards funding Adi's Vision to create a retreat for tourists near to his village on a beautiful plot of land over looking the sea and Rijani volcano. By making a retreat he will be able to create jobs for more members of the community. He has already built a restaurant but its barely being used at the moment, until he is able to make some cabins. This will allow him to offer treks and tours of the local natural wonders, which offers him and his team a good income.
We are also working on creating a small scale organic farm on the plot of land to promote sustainability and we are hoping we can build the cabins off-grid.

This is common in Thailand too, although it does stain white skin & your clothing badly, as I discovered in the early days here. :) Look fwd to more about the adventures and the eco project in lombok. Lovely post.

Thanks for the info! Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia are very closely connected I guess, so I can imagine the remedies would be similar. Yes tumeric is a bit of an issue on white skin, altho I'm finding the fresher the tumeric is the easier it washes off but that might be my imagination. I'm not too bothered about it, neither is anyone else that bothered it seems by staining things, which is quite nice and refreshing attitude.

There are lots of other local things that don't stain & equally if not more effective. I wear white a lot (naturally repels mosquitoes!) and after 16 years in Asia the stains are just urgh! :)

This is so cool. I am going to Lombok beginning of September and would love to visit Adi and the village (I am going there as part of a longer travel through Indonesia and south east Asia. Any chance you could put us in contact?
Thanks for sharing this.

I'm sure he would love to have you visit. Just search Adi Lombok transport on Facebook. He has a good car and he has airport service, also trekking and tours of the local area. You will love North lombok it's so beautiful and very few tourists especially if you stay in the village you will have an amazing experience!

Amazing, thank you so much!

Do you know what's in the paste? Those mozzies are pesky!!

Have you fixed those pesky sinuses And headache?

Sounds like a cool little project.

They won't stop the mosquito but will soothe the bite. All it is a plant, but I don't know the name in English it's called duan mimba, tumeric and salt

After a little digging I found out its neem, but the fresh herb here didn't smell like the neem I know from when I've brought in oil form
