Economics: Political Warfare in Disguise

in #economics6 years ago

As the glory years of ‘Free Trade’ are winding down (which was never free in any real sense, there were the exploiters, the exploited, and the third-world leaders receiving their kickbacks and loans never to be paid back, leaving many nations further impoverished) POTUS imposes his tariffs on imported steel and aluminum that in his whimsical view will somehow restore U.S. industrial prosperity. And if you had any doubts still about the inextricable link always between politics and economics, the tensions between the U.S. and China are also heating up via the previously unheard of Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS). The proposed takeover of QualComm by Singapore based Broadcom is one of a half-dozen deals that have now been opposed by CFIUS citing concerns over national security over access to computer chips, semiconductors, and other technological innovation. The undercurrents of political, industrial, military, technological and social conflicts remain as ripe as ever.
