There are just a few basic needs for a survival of a man — clean water, food, shelter and energy. What if you could cheaply create your own oasis, completely independent from the grid?

Well, the State would ban off-grid living and provide you a different kind of accomodation, of course 😉 Still, that did not stop an architect, Michael Reynolds, to fulfill his dream — completely self-sufficient houses that are part of the environment, and not a burden on it.

His ideal home had to have six requirements:

• It would have to be made from recycled materials
• It must maintain a comfortable climate
• It should generate sustainable power from renewable sources
• It should treat its sewage
• It should provide clean potable water
• It should provide food, for its inhabitants.

He has built his first ‘Earthship’ in 1972 almost entirely from empty soda and beer cans and rammed earth. Since then, centralization of everything has got the planet to the edge of destruction, and he is now leading a movement that advocates “radical sustainability.”

He is calling his building style “Biotecture”, and has established Earthship Academy and intern program, to teach people from all over the world how to build homes and other buildings based on ‘biotecture’ principles. And he is trying to organize sustainable development and poverty relief projects all over the world.

Yet, it is not all without controversy. As we have already pointed out, the alienated State is trying to suppress independence whichever way they can. Biotecture designs have fallen foul of the authorities for violating building codes. Some places have banned off-grid living altogether.

And yes, it is not all ideal so far — some owners have complained their homes have not performed as advertised. This is a new, mutual way of living, which requires taking care of a home structure, so the home could take care of you. It is still a process of learning and exchanging experiences. The whole idea has gotten a boost with decentralized cryptocurrencies, and now, more then ever can grow in the direction of state transformation and abolition of insane, corporate interests driven regulations.

Either that, or a violent revolution…
