As many of you probably know, the U.S. will be experiencing a full solar eclipse across much of the country on August 21 at about 1:30pm EST. Everyone should know that you can't watch a solar eclipse directly. Even though the sun is covered, you could seriously damage your eyesight.

In preparation,

you could get a pair of proper eye protection, like welding glasses, which you may have handy around the house. OR, you could get some proper eyeglasses for about $20 on the internet. DO NOT be fooled by some cheapy stuff that actually will not protect your eyes!

OR, you could make your own

PINHOLE CAMERA!

I made mine in about 3 minutes. Here's what you'll need:

2 pieces of white shirt cardboard (okay, I used just white paper which will end up being super flimsy, but you'll get the idea !)
small square of foil,
scissors, tape, and a paper clip

STEP 1: Fold one piece of paper (cardboard) in half

STEP 2: Cut a small square on the folded side of the cardboard/paper

STEP 3: Tape the small foil square to the back of the cardboard/paper

STEP 4: Make a small hole in the foil with the paperclip

STEP 5: HOPE for a SUNNY day!

STEP 6: Stand with your back to the sun and put the second piece of white paper/cardboard on the ground (preferable in the shade) and at the same time, hold the piece with the foil hole in a manner that the sun shines on it. And voila! You'll be able to watch the moon's shadow go across the sun on the piece of paper that is on the ground! (For purpose of this demo, I am using the table chandelier as the 'sun' and the table as 'the ground'!)

See the little "sun" shining on the bottom paper? You can make the hole bigger if you wish, but the point is, you'll be able to watch the shadow of the moon go across the sun. Cool!

Good luck to everyone and I hope you get to see the eclipse. In NJ we will only see 75% of a total eclipse. You can check here to find out when and how much you'll be able to see

I hope we can see the eclipse here in Vienna.. chances are we won't because of grey skies, it's been raining since days.. Thanks for the turorial.. Good luck, hope you have a bright eclipse day! Followed, upvoted and resteemed.

thanks @mers ! I'm following you too :-)

wow! you posted this one hour before mine! It looks cumbersome to cut a hole through the bottom of a box. I'm thinking you could use a shoebox (with no lid), or a large cardboard box, and turn it upside down so that you can see in easily.

I didn't realise there is a solar eclipse soon.
Too bad it is not going to be in England.
This is a magnificent tutorial @gardenlady.
Definitely great to have a bit of fun and want better way than to do some DIY

I think here in Italy we couldn't see the eclipse, but your pinhole camera will be useful for the next ;) Thanks for share ^_^

Very ingenious like gadget, unfortunately one will not use it often, thanks for sharing
