Dwarf Fortress story: The Defects of the Flesh
Hi!
I've been playing a game called the Dwarf Fortress for a long time and I've decided to start a new fortress for almost a year. Now as I'm a member of Steemit, I'll do my best to share the story with all of you.
The fortress is called Beeapple the Grim Honey and the group of dwarves is called The Defects of the Flesh. I've chosen the spot in a world I generated with the standard settings and I went on and created a group of 7 dwarves, bringing loads of rum and ale with me, along with two loyal dogs. I felt like my dwarves would be no pansies, so the only food I took with me was prepared yak hearts. If I'd ever be out of food, I could eat my dogs! Yay!
Set off
Our group arrived to the mountains. We stopped our wagon in the piles of white snow, as we were too tired to continue deeper. We could find some metals from the depths of the mountain and we could see some woods below us. Cilob Eturetar, the leader of our expedition made the decision to stop here, even though some objected: we didn't have any sources of water?
But who drinks water anyways. We are dwarves. We love the booze!
We dug straight down the mountain and we found some metals - Cilob was right after all. He's the leader for a good reason.
When we had mined a few floors down Cilob decided this is the perfect spot to build.. or mine our Fortress. He made up plans for our community space. He made some crazy designs with the bedrooms. There'd be extra room, but when we get our fortress running, we'll be getting migrants running for gold and fame and then we'll need room. A lot of room. Still can't understand his crazy thoughts.. one door for every two rooms to save some wood? What is he, a damn hippie tree-hugging pansy elf?
We'd still have the problem with drinking. We should get farming up as fast as we could, because if we can't have even water to drink, we'll die in dehydration real fast! Still rather to be dead than to live only on water. We need some ale. Now for more work before the lads will get hungry
Summer, year 250
Finally it's summer! The snow has melted away and we've been chopping some wood to make some beds. The miners are still mining through the workshop space Cilob told us to dig. "If we go big, we go big" is what he said. Didn't really get what he meant by that, but we've been digging for months already and our stock of ale is running lower every day. I want to find a spot for our farms and build a brewery! That's what I want!
Finally, some underground soil! Not only the rocks and stones which bring us life, but the clay in which we can plant our plump helmets. Cilob was exalted and he commanded us to dig a fine dining hall close to the farm. He promised he'd build a statue in the room himself, but I highly doubt that.
The word of our fortress has reached ears of the most brave ones. Three migrants arrived: Cog the soap maker, Besmar the cook and Ïteh the administrator. When he arrived, we could see he was also a seasoned warrior and he was extremely handy with an axe - at least compared to rest of us. Cilob was a bit weary with Ïteh, as Cilob feared Ïteh may gain popularity with his skills in combat and in administration. To show his superiority, Cilob ordered all the newcomers to work - and to learn new trades, needed currently in our Fortress.
Ïteh was commanded to smoothen the rough stone walls and floors in our bedrooms. Cilob did this only to show his power, no doubt. Ïteh obeyed.
Autumn is at the doors. Some complained about the unfair treatment of Ïteh.. the newcomers. They were not yet friends together, but they were clearly friendly enough as they all were newcomers with us. Cilob doesn't want to be a tyrant, not in the eyes of newcomers and not in the eyes of us, the first dwarves who settled here. Cilob is also a tricky one and he gave Ïtoh a job according to his skills.
Ïtoh was appointed as both bookkeeper and manager of our Fortress. He was given an simple office, even though Cilob wanted it to be placed upstairs, very close to the entrance of the Fortress.
If we'll ever be attacked by goblins, Ïtoh will be the first one they meet and he can protect us from those goblin devils
Ïtoh felt proud, as he was given this important task. I am sure Cilob didn't place Ïtoh at the entrance in hopes of safety of Ïtoh and our fortress, but hoping some lucky goblin would stab Ïtoh and leave Cilob to leadership once again.
Autumn has finally come...
And I'll continue the story later, I don't care if you like it or not
Dwarf Fortress is a game created by Tarn and Zach Adams. The game is still on alpha stage, as it has been for years now. The development started 2006 and it is completely freeware game, developed with help of donations from fans and gamers. The game is extremely complex, starting from temperatures and waterflows to very detailed combat system and damage control.
An arrow can cut a dwarf finger off and you'll know it. A goblin can stab a dwarf in his lung, he can be operated on and if the dwarf survives, he'll be able to live a normal dwarf life.. depending on the surgeon skill. If it's a bad surgeon, he'll have trouble breathing for rest of his life. If you lose a leg, you'll need a crutch. If you're attacked by a dragon.. keep your liquor hidden, as it's flammable.
Dwarf Fortress has a extremely high learning curve, but.. losing is fun.

Count me in for reading this because I have read a lot abut this game but have never played so its very interesting to me to see it in story form like this.
Thank you :)
That looks like a fun game @apsu! Except for the part where you said, "I felt like my dwarves would be no pansies, so the only food I took with me was prepared yak hearts. If I'd ever be out of food, I could eat my dogs! Yay!" tsk tsk tsk... Bad cheetah! He will spank your a$$! lol!
Thanks, it is a fun game as soon as you get into it :) Some prefer graphic tilesets you can get in the game, I love the more informative ascii-style.
The dwarves enjoyed the yak hearts ;) Dogs are still ok.
I bet it's addicting! My brother plays a lot of computer games, maybe he will like that one too. Will you consider the game, Galaga an ascii-style? I'm a 90's baby. I used to play that a lot. lol!
He might like that, but this is really usually a "love it or hate it" kind of game :)
I haven't played Galaga, but I'm not sure if it counts as ASCII-style.. as I think it means only the games with letters and symbols as objects, no other kinds of graphics. Like in this case, D is a donkey, d is a dog, c is a cat, a green D is a dragon, % is food and such :)
