Monumental Archway [BLDG 0008] : 3D Modeling the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

BLOCKTOWN is a community art project powered through your comments and engagement. It’s an experimental game of city-making, a digital Madurodam. With each post, a new layer of buildings will be added to the Town. Your photographs, quotes, stories and feedback are the raw materials that drive construction for each new layer.

A Video of the Modeling Process (Click Image Above)

Thank you to @miniature-tiger for the image submission! This building in BLOCKTOWN is based off of the monumental Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile of Paris, France. The Arc was built in 1806 and remains an iconic 162' tall character of the Parisian skyline.

Click the very first image of this post (a dtube video) to get a look at the process of assembling and modeling the Arc structure, beginning with the 2D image submission and growing the 3D modeled character.

How to Play

Take a look at the announcement post, here. Each building and landscape element of BLOCKTOWN will be derived directly from your comments. Photographs, quotes and stories will inspire their own design logic and manifest themselves as 3D characters within the Town.

If you'd like to participate beyond image comments, download the Rhino template file I've prepared on Github and assemble a custom building of your own. Once you re-upload it, I'll add it in.

An Experiment in Building Community

Through this project - I hope to engage in a broader dialogue with fellow Steemians about their own sense of place and placemaking. These types of game-structured conversations are a fascinating way of learning more about what a person defines as his or her “community.” It’s a way of connecting to one another through the geographies we are deeply tied to and knowledgeable of. In a world of links, likes, upvotes and IP addresses, it’s exciting to find ways of bridging the digital divide and connecting with those on the other side of the screen.

Let's get building!

Hey @voronoi, that is truly cool! Thanks for adding in the Arc, it's always been one of my favourite buildings, since I lived in Paris a long time. You've done a great job with it!

The software looks really flexible on the video. I'm hoping to get some time to have a play with it myself. I always thought it would be interesting to be an architect and I think this is as close as I will get!

Thanks so much for the idea and approval ;)

I didn't realize that the archways went both directions (you'll see an awkward pause in the video). Rhino is a pretty intuitive and fun program to use. There's a free trial download of it available if you ever want to experiment :D

I love this idea. I think it's very outside-the-box thinking and a great fit for the Steem community. I'm personally a bit biased, as I have an interest in architecture, space, and creating experience through its manipulation.

As you said, people are deeply tied to their own respective geographies that they are tied to and, of course, the same goes for the architecture they experience. The mind experiment you are creating by plugging this concept into a tangible landscape made by a diverse readership like this is definitely a fun one to say the least!

Thanks for bringing this to the community.

Thank you for such a kind and thoughtful comment! Absolutely, I’ve had a lot of fun with it purely as a kind of placemaking / placefinding experiment.

It’s rare to find a forum (like Steemit) where you can glean bits and pieces of stories from such a diverse breadth of backgrounds. Thanks again!

What a cool program. You really know how to wheel and deal on it. How long would it take for a newb (I'm an accountant, with little more experience than Paint Shop, haha) to learn it and how much hard drive space does it occupy? I love how you import the picture and have it there side by side. It looks great! The town is really coming together.

It's not so bad! It's fairly intuitive after a youtube video tutorial or two. (It's also free to download here, as a trial.)

I'd say that the hardest part of Rhino is navigating different commands. It can do just about anything you want, it's just a matter of getting in a rhythm of knowing where to extrude X or rotate Y or create a circle etc... once you nail down 4-5 commands, you can have a lot of fun with it.

Importing a picture is super easy!
Command : "pictureframe"

I see we have a great Arc to enter the BlockTown! Looks pretty great.

Thanks @leotrap :D

Wow, at about 5:30 in the video it is especially cool! Really enjoyed it, thanks.
