A good way to sterilize sponges or your handmade version if to wet them slightly and put them in the microwave. This zaps the bacteria and stuff to prolong their live even more. Given your lifestyle, you may not have a microwave, but boiling water may be an alternative. I'm not sure if the washing machine kills the bacteria as well, or evens mixes it up with the other items in your wash.

Didn't realize we have these interest in common. Will start following along.

heyyy awesome! You're right, I don't have a microwave, but I do have a dryer, so that would probably kill the bacteria too. Yes, I'm a big fan of not wasting stuff, reusing, up-cycling etc. Especially if it's good for the environment =)
