What Are Kids Learning In School Today?

in #dtube5 years ago (edited)

We have radically changed our industries, sciences, culture, and so much more in the past 100 years, but the one thing that hasn't really changed much is our educational system. Why is this that?

I ponder over some of my own experiences and I feel that we have overlooked that it's not set up to be ideal for graduates anymore.

I'm really curious to hear from you and what you think about all this in the comments below.

I think schools will eventually teach some form of Post-modernism but at the same time, I think traditional schools will eventually be a thing of the past.

Most things will probably be done online eventually, and it will be on-demand education like edX.org.

I think that will be the ideal way to go about it, kids should spend a certain amount of time each day learning, but what they learn should be up to their own interests outside the basics

education is antiquated, and it needs desperately to be reformed to meet modern needs. we no longer need to learn as much in the way we do because its irrelevant. beyond the basics, what use do most people have for advanced mathematics, history, chemistry, etc.

computers do the work if we know which questions to ask. what we need more of is HOW to make queries, do research, apply what we know to practical situations, write code, develop apps and most of all, how to read, think and analyse things critically. this is something that is totally missing in the lower levels. sure we should know a bit of everything. but years of repeating u.s history, memorizing dates and wars? not needed. analysis of social trends? useful.

what we also need is practical or living skills education. how to understand the government, laws and human rights, environmental awareness, survival skills, emotional awareness, sustainable living, health, fitness and disease, economic theory, personal finance, ethics, mindfulness, intercultural communication, and the simple mechanics of fixing things so we dont need to hire a plumber to change out a bad valve. how to use technology efficiently and effectively. the dangers inherent in technological reliance. relatively none of this is taught at the advanced degree it should be, and with a neutral focus in mind.

most education could easily take place on line with internet access and proper discipline. all these costs for schooling could easily be cut. textbooks? why??? put them online. classes? online or user preference. schools should be based on the students desire to learn and explore, not forced down their throats.

i guarantee half the kids out there didnt learn because they werent given a choice on the what, when or how. maybe they are an introvert stuck into a grup and have too much anxiety to concentrate. or a visual person hearing a lecture with no diagrams, or given a book when you learn better thru example. learning should be based on the individual so that it isnt a waste of time.
