Outdoor Sketching In England - With Watercolour & Gouache - ART VIDEO

in #dtube5 years ago (edited)

In this video I talk about the experience and challenge of sketching and painting from life outside, and getting started with any art materials.

I show my first video footage of me sketching and painting 'en plein air' (a French term which means outside, or 'out of doors') in my hometown Brighton, England. I talk about some of my process, and also why I think outdoor sketching is important for both beginner and professional visual artists.

I will create some detailed 'How To' video's of drawing and painting from life and in the studio in future videos.

Personally I absolutely love plein air sketching and painting nature, landscapes and architecture, but I also love to draw and paint the figure from life. Sketching outdoors makes you feel alive, especially when you are out in a stunning natural environment. The exercise forces you to do your best in a limited time, as conditions can change quickly. You just muster the courage, grab your chosen arsenal of art materials, and head out the door! ;)

I also find the practice of switching between the traditional and digital mediums very useful, it helps keep my productivity, energy and enthusiasm high. Both reinforce each other, for me anyway.

In the video I used a red Prisma colour pencil for the initial sketch, then combinations of watercolours and white gouache.

I hope you find something useful in this video, if you do watch until the end, thank you very much. And if you like it, please like, comment, share or subscribe. 🙏🏻

Don't feel bad about first videos being a bit shaky/out of focus/you dropped the camera blah blah blah a) it's much funnier this way and b) that's how you learn right ;D (unless you're a painting prodigy and everything you've ever done in your life was amazing from the first time you touched a surface with a paintbrush or little child fingers in which case consider this a good learning experience ;D)

I do like watching artwork form sometimes. Not sure how you manage it in public though, I'm too paranoid to even wear headphones in public never mind be concentrating on artwork XD (and it's not like I live anywhere dangerous!)
