DTube has been up and running since July. Curious to know what has happened in the space of 1 month and how its popularity has changed as compared to YouTube. Courtesy of @heimindanger for allowing me to do this. So let's dive in!

For those who don't know what DTube is, here is a short description. Launched on 11th August 2017, developed by @heimindanger, is the first Decentralised (meaning of the D infront of DTube) platform that allows for content creators to store videos using blockchain technology. It gives you the ability to upload your video as well as writing your post that goes with the video in one place. DTube gives Steemians the freedom to download any video they like, comment and upvote on the post directly. The Stats of DTube

1. Traffic & Engagement

Started at the 7,374,394 position in July 2017 (testing phase) and now globally ranked 73 350th while in the US alone, it is at the 27 934th spot. For a website which is one month old, its rise to popularity has been exponential! 

With a traffic of over  865K with most traffic coming from desktop as compared to mobile. Visitors spend on average 4 minutes watching videos and checks on average 3.7 pages per visit. Many of you must be asking what is this Bounce rate! Well it is a metric that indicates the percentage of people who land on one of DTube page and then leave without clicking to go anywhere else on the website.

2. Geography

Any guesses? The main source of traffic is the US with 37.97%, followed by the UK with 8.02%. With such a huge representative in Steemit from China and Korea, their usage of DTube is 0.07% and 0.12% respectively

3. Audience interest

What are people watching DTube currently searching for most? The answer is none of the most popular categories like government, news, adult, business, sports. Here is a list of the terms that have been searched in DTube. As always porn is on the menu with chubby and sex among the terms!

4. Marketing Mix

How is DTube promoting itself. How is it being accessed and by which sites people are getting to know about DTube? Most of the traffic is from Steemians who have heard and used DTube through Steemit. This was the primary source of advertisement that DTube has used and has been effective with 36.38% of users using the dtube.video link directly.

In terms of figures, we can see it in the below graph.

Apart from Steemit, the other referrals are coming from Youtube and Facebook themselves. Big applause to all those Steemians who are promoting DTube on their other social media accounts :) We can also notice that Steemit has a global rank of 4 238 which is really fantastic for a platform which is still in Beta version.

5. Search

Here we are going to look at how search engines are returning DTube as a result. It does not necessarily mean that someone was searching for Dtube directly but by some other keywords which made DTube appear as a search result. The competitive overlap parameter is for people who have searched for DTube and then visited the other websites like Steemit and Dtubeapp.

DTube is not using any paid advertisement for promotion and it still generated a little under 1 million visitors in one month. The referral system is working real great and this shows the engagement of the Steemit community to help grow the platform and all associated tools with it. +1 for all Steemians :) Below are the results of using search engines to access Dtube website.

DTube V/S Youtube

The long awaited comparison between the 2 rivals which works on different philosophies and technology. While one is on the blockchain, decentralised in nature with the community as a whole providing censorship, the other is on a centralised database, governed by policy makers and governments.

1. Rankings

We are comparing DTube, a one month old baby of 2017 with a giant of 2005 so the gap in ranking will obviously be huge with Youtube at # 3 position and DTube at # 73 450.

2. Traffic overview

So here we are going to compare the traffic of both sites, showing how many users visits and page visits. As expected, Youtube would be better but if we look at the statistics, we can analyse it differently. 

With a bounce back rate of just 36% as compared to Youtube's 23%, I would say that this is a very good sign for DTube. People are more interested in knowing what DTube is at the moment and trying to navigate to the maximum number of pages. If DTube adds the feature of 'related videos' section, the bounce back rate will be definitely much lower and will even be comparable to that of Youtube or even better.

3. Traffic sources

The statistics looks pretty even for the traffic sources and this shows the limited roads available for sharing content and to search for contents. All blue statistics is that of DTube.

DTube's referral and social promotions are even better than that of Youtube. The Steemit community is really pushing the popularity of DTube forward and this shows that we are stronger as a community! A big round of applause to all Steemians working hard to promote DTube and adding videos on the blockchain.

Conclusion

All Steemians present before July have witnessed the birth of a new and future altering tool in the form of DTube. I have been using DTube to host all my videos ever since I heard of it. Only the last video that I posted was unsuccessful as I was not on the right API. Anyone experiencing video upload issues, change the following setting as shown in the screenshot below. As stated by @heimindanger during our chat, the first API is the most powerful one and the others have been added as backups.

There are many lacking features on DTube but as we all know, it is still in its infancy. I can feel that the developers are working hard to stabilize the platform and develop a powerful backend. Then they will concentrate on the front end features as we need a strong base to build a long lasting castle over it.
