Drosera Capensis - Carnivorous Plant Native to Cape Town (South Africa).

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

Its leaves are covered with hair with mucilage, a sticky substance whose function is to trap insects that will then be digested by enzymes for that purpose.
Care of the plant Drosera, Drósera or Rocío del sol
The genus Drosera belongs to the Droseraceae family and is made up of more than 100 species of perennial plants (evergreen and deciduous) native to temperate and subtropical areas of Africa, Europe and Australia. The name of the genus comes from the Greek and means "covered with dew".

It is also known by the vulgar names of Drósera, Rocío del sol or (Atrapamoscas de los pantanos.)

These are small carnivorous plants that have rosette leaves with linear shape and are covered with viscous reddish hairs that seem to have a drop of dew on the tip. Thanks to this sticky liquid the insects are trapped and the plant decomposes them with their digestive enzymes. They produce small flowers, almost always white, that are not interesting from the ornamental point of view.

They are used to form terrariums in a room, for example, combined even with other carnivores such as Dionaea. Some species can be kept outside by a pond provided there is no frost; it is the case of the Drosera rotundifolia and the Drosera anglica.

The tropical drusers are grown indoors (greenhouse or house) in a light exposure, with temperatures that do not fall below 10 ºC and high humidity (spray the plant frequently with water without lime). Temperate species can be grown outdoors and need a semi-shade or direct sun exposure (if the weather is very hot in summer) and temperatures above 4 ° C.

The ideal soil would be a mixture of 1/3 of peat compost and 3/3 of sphagnum moss with a layer of live moss on the surface of the earth to retain moisture. Transplants should be done in the spring.

Water frequently because they are plants that live in marshy areas and need a lot of humidity.
They do not need special subscribers as they get organic matter from the insects they capture.
They are resistant plants that are not usually victims of the attack of pests and diseases.
They multiply from seeds sown in spring or by division of bush at the same time.
