When I first started, it was frowned upon. But I do see some people do it and I did it myself in the beginning.
But I choose not to now as hopefully it adds credibility to what I am saying.

I did the exact same thing @shaidon. But after watching @d00k13's video and what he said. I soon stopped because I liked his reasoning.

It does add a little credibility as your not seen as just making content for the sake of paying yourself though I do it so I can pay others with that power.

In the beginning I did it because there was nothing worse than uploading content and seeing $0.00 next to it.
I am not against self upvoting, but there was certainly a backlash against it. I think it can give someone bragging rights to say that their upvote percentage is 0%. But like you said, with more Steem Power you can help others.
So it's up to the individual I guess.

Great question and one that seems to be a bit of a grey area on here.
I chose to stop upvoting myself when I recieved Nathans (now expired) 777 delegation to me just after the summer.
Before this, as a plankton on here I would self vote EVERYTHING I posted, including comments. But with Nathan's 777 on my account I suddenly felt like I was abusing his support. I voted myself once with that power for about 6c and instantly felt like I was cheating the game. I had a feeling people would notice and look down on me for it too. It didn't feel good in any way. So I have never self voted since.
I believe, like in life, that there are many ways to play the game. As long as you do what makes sense to you, then you are doing the right thing.
If you feel shady doing it, then don't do it! If you have no problem with it then who is gonna stop you?
I feel like my integrity as a budding creator is worth more to me than giving myself 2c steem (less than half of 1 english penny) a couple times a day, but that's just me! =)
I overheard a nice simple saying recently... "You do you, innit"
..meaning be yourself and don't worry about it.
But thats just my opinion =)

Right on brother we have the choice to support others or only try support ourselves, it is rather remarkable how much more support I receive than I am able to give.... that’s how appreciation works!

I don’t. I have 2 reasons. My upvote is not so big to make a real difference in my account growth but would take away from being able to vote for more people.
Also, I am part of the engagement league and win ever so often for not self voting- and I like that 🤣
