Get Better Video Quality On DTube 0.7! PART 2 | DtubeDaily

in #dtube8 years ago (edited)

In this video I’ll give you some tips on keeping your footage looking crisp and clean on the new DTube 0.7 update! These are just some guidelines, you don’t always have to do all these things, but if you use one or of these on each shot your footage will look great even with the new compression.

The tips:

1. Keep the camera and subject steady, or still.

Motion blur doesn’t handle compression very well, and things moving around the frame quickly can get really blocky.

2. Keep things simple.

If you have a lot of complex details in your shot they can start to blend together and look a little blocky. For a good example of how well this can work check out @captainbob’s videos. They always look great and handle the compression really well.

3. Record in high quality.

(at least 1080p if you can) Even though you can only watch videos here in 720p, if you record in 720p you’ll get compressed 720p, but if you record in 1080p or 4k, it will be compressed 1080p or 4k which will look a lot better. It also gives you some other benefits like being able to zoom in and reframe your shot while editing. For a great example of this check out @art.visuals He does a ton of amazing drone work and cinematic travel videos. He shoots in 4k and even after it's compressed it looks incredible.

4. Be sure to have good lighting.

Another thing that doesn’t handle compression very well is shadows. They’ll often group together into a blocky mess, so make sure you have plenty of light on your subject. This is really easy to do even if you don’t have any lighting equipment, just get close to a window or something. Natural light looks great!

Check out @captainbob’s tutorial on lighting here: https://steemit.com/dtube/@captainbob/4443roao

5. Export and upload at 720p.

Even if you’re shooting at 4k, you want to make sure you’re exporting your footage at 720p, it’s a smaller file size so it will load and playback a lot smoother, and it helps @dtube not get swamped with too much data. @maneki-neko also pointed out that if your video doesn’t handle the compression well, you can make a note to your viewers to watch the video in the original uncompressed format by clicking the little gear icon on the bottom right and selecting “source” This won’t work and might not load at all if you’re uploading in 1080p or 4k.

Here's Maneki's video where he has a more in-depth explanation of this:

You can work within these guidelines and still make awesome videos! Just think creatively! If you want some ideas on this, check out @spenceryan and @kevinli, they are always putting the camera in interesting places and finding creative ways to add interest to their shots. They make really awesome, entertaining content so definitely go follow them if you haven't already!

Great collection of tips!
Ohh, I wish I had found this earlier. Thanks for reminding about the 720p! 😄 I'll add a note!

Thank you Kate! I tried to get it out yesterday but couldn't get it finished... Better late than never though! :)

I'm trying to watch this and am getting an error that the media could not be loaded either because the network failed or the media is not supported ...

Sorry @cambridgeport90, things have been a bit glitchy lately... but it's a young platform, these things are to be expected :\ If you're still interested, the tips from the vid are laid out in the description and steem article.

Thanks for the hand. That's why I'm here. I love providing support in any possible way to new platforms like this. You'll be seeing some videos from me up here hopefully this week.

Sounds good! Can't wait to see them!

Looks like the issues seem to be fixing themselves, honestly. I was up there for a bit and was able to view stuff. I'm thinking it might be people's uploads causing the issue, unfortunately. I can't wait until I get a first vidwo up there later on in the week; you can see all of my crazy technological escapades.

Great video. Thanks for the shout-out man! I've enjoyed this series you are doing.

Thanks man! Glad you liked it!

No wonder my videos were looking low quality. 1080p it is! Thanks

@dr741 Glad I could help! Yeah, it seems like it would just be lost resolution, but it really makes a big difference!
