Mail Order Trees Part 2: Planting

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the second part of the Mail Order Trees series. In this video I show you how I plant a variety of mail order trees on our homestead property.

As I mentioned in the last video summary, I did quite a bit of research into different mail order nurseries before settling on who I wanted to try. What I didn't mention was my motivation for doing these test plantings.

I have a long term vision of our property being a working permaculture farm that will include a variety of fruit and nut trees as well as many support species. I will also be integrating animals into the system at some point. What I don't know just yet is what the final mix of trees will be. There are so many factors that play a role in deciding what trees to use: hardiness zone, precipitation, soil type, microclimates, etc. On top of that, I have yet to find a quality guide book for planning this type of system in my area. As far as I am aware, the closest working permaculture farm that is set up how I want to operate is Mark Shepard's New Forest Farm in Wisconsin. Even if I wanted to implement strategies exactly as he has, which I don't, I would still need to make adjustments because we are in a slightly colder climate and some of the species of trees he uses won't grow here.

Since I don't know for sure what will work and what won't, I decided to trial a variety of trees this year. Even if a lot of them fail or perform poorly at least this will be a learning experience for me. Also, there is an old Chinese proverb that says:

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

So I figured that I better get started!

We started much like you. Just a few trees and plants at at time to see how they faired. We were new to the tropical climate and everything was an experiment. It still is as we try new species of trees and plants to grow on the homestead. Some do well and others not. We share the experimental plants with a friend who has a slightly different micro climate than we do. What may grow well for us may not for him and visa versa.

Thanks for sharing. It is all a learning experience.

Where did you live in Canada before moving to Nicaragua?

We lived in the banana belt...southern Ontario.

Beautiful pictures and interesting content , I am also a farm owner and what you write is helpful .I have up voted your post.

Thank you! I checked out your blog and you have some interesting articles.

Yeees! Good luck with your vision! Some amazing trees! May they bring many gifts :)

Thanks! Yes I already own the property where this video was filmed. It is going to take years. Maybe decades to get it to where I want.

Then you got this! Slow but sure. :)

new follower here, enjoy your blog. Tiny house series esp.

Thanks! I checked out your blog and there are definitely a few cool books in there. I will have to take a better look when I have more time it is almost 1 AM here!

Cool...I want try this Shinseiki Asian Pear :) and put the plums too :)

That reminds me. Plums! There are definitely a bunch of hardy plums available. I don't think I am going to have time to plant any more then I have already committed to next spring though. Lots of other things I need to work on.

It is ok...:)) I was just say ... but this trees are cool too :) here in Estonia lot this trees not grow :)

We are going to have to get some in on our property soon. Not sure what trees we will plant yet, as so many to choose from and we have only so much room.

How big is your property?

We have a little over 11 acres. We will have 3 houses on it, plus animals when it is all said and done. When we exactly where we will put house we will plant our trees.

Yeah we are in much the same situation. All the trees I planted were in out of the way areas that wouldn't interfere with our yard site. We will probably have two houses.
