In the summer of 2017 I was fortunate enough to visit the insanity that is Barcelona. It is an old Gothic city forced into the modern world. The modern world that has far to many young people looking for a good time and a place to puke.
I loved Barcelona. But 3 weeks was enough. Amongst the most amazing architecture, food and people, you will find a city with a lot of history and heart. Nevertheless it is highly inundated with an astounding amount of tourists. Including myself. The impression that I get from Barcelona is that it has had enough. You can see it everywhere. In the art the people and the general vibe of the place you feel that the tourism is taking its tole. The “Turista Conquista” is in full effect and the city is losing control over itself.
Once you dare to venture to the far edges of the city you will find something more Authentic
Restaurants that are making what the locals eat and stores for the neighborhoods. It's calmer and gentler on the outskirts of Barcelona.
But once you venture inward again you will have the high contrast of ancient cathedrals and historically important monuments.

Such a different approach to a travel video .... I love it! So refreshing to see something different! In Valencia we're all a bit nervous, because since Barcelona is right on the edge of a touristic collapse, Valencia is on the radar and this summer we're expecting the biggest touristic numbers in history. Good Tourism is great BUT ......

I really hope Valencia doesn't get smashed by all the tourists. Barcelona really is on the verge of who knows what. This summer will be interesting for the city. And it's not just the 20 something! We just got back from a For 91 Days in Lisbon and we were during off season! And I can't even imagine how it's going to be in the Summer. You can see already in Alfama anti tourist graffiti and I can totally understand the citizens .. and I feel horrible because we're part of the problem. But with our website we try to steer people away from the bucketlist sights! There is so much more ....! For example the TimeOut market - everyone runs there. It's horrible - it's an glorified food-court. That's it ! And in the mean time family restaurants, authentic ones have to shot down because they don't get enough business! It's just sad!
Exactly. With the glorification of social media tourism, where people are there purely for the content, yet fail to understand where they are and the cultures they are visiting. It drives members of these cultures crazy. And yeah local restaurants and businesses get looked over in favor of Mcdonalds and KFC. I couldn't believe seeing my 1st KFC in Spain. Super sad yer hilarious. Like you said that's when you start to see the anti-tourism Graffiti. Which I totally respect it's very beautiful.
Those are some interesting thoughts. I lived on the outskirts of Barcelona actually! I agree 3 weeks is enough though lol. All of my friends that I made there wanted to form their own country... I know you know this.
They said that Barcelona was carrying all of Spain on it's back because they were bringing in all the money w/ tourists. Interesting to read your thoughts combined with memories of what my friends were saying.
Yeah Catalonia Really wants its independence. About a week after I left the city is when they had their little revolutionary uprising. They voted for independence but the Spanish government will keep putting up a stink. You keep feel that everyone there was a little frustrated for many reasons.
