Notes

Today I wrote & recorded this song in Garageband. Everything was performed by me & all sounds were made by mouth except for some handclaps. The song is about all the ways we mask our true feelings and cover up old wounds instead of letting them surface so they can be processed and healed. It also discusses the power of love, forgiveness, and compassion: powerful abilities that can be unlocked, but only with our consent. The more human beings open themselves to this type of development, the further we get in the process of transforming our world into the paradise that it meant to become. Here are the links to listen to the song on dsound:

My goal with these recordings is to re-energize my singing practice in anticipation of finishing my debut album "Cosmic Youth" sometime this year. I also want to experiment with combining beatboxing, singing, and spoken word/rapping. Since I'm not a trained audio engineer, I'm doing my best to make them sound decent, but the overall goal is to take everything I've learned during 2017 writing poetry and beatboxing and apply that into my songwriting/composition. I rely heavily on improvisation and enjoy creating short pieces all in one day, when possible. It's nice to keep it under two minutes in length because it's more managable. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the song! As always, I highly value your input, and am honored by all the wonderful responses I get on these posts, so feel free to say what comes to mind.

Excuse me for asking

Verse

Excuse me for asking, but are you afraid?
'Cause I see so many modern humans
That pretend they're ok.

Hypnotized by the bright lights
But underneath they hide pain.
Distract themselves with the picturesque sights
(Entertainment escapism laughter inane.)

But our existence is much deeper than it seems.
Some people hoard up their scars
In churning thunderclouds, inescapable dreams.

Scared to open their heart to an uncaring world,
But love and forgiveness are real:
If you unlock them the power unfurls.

Chorus:

Everyone said they wanna be free, yeah
So let's find the courage within to face our misery.
Everyone afraid to show their face, yeah
So let compassion flow; let's build our paradise.

okay let me hear it again i thought that two people are singing the song

haha, yeah, I layered my voice in a lot of tracks :-D
some singing, some rapping, and some beatboxing.

yes that,s why i got confused . but you are very talented. you are a post also rapper and singer. what else can you do?

can i ask you a question?

@d-pend, this was so very interesting to listen to! I listened to it first and then came back and read the words and then listened again! Thanks for sharing your creation here on Steemit, so we know about your musical talent also!

Whoah. I love the sound on this recording. You really did a great job recording and mixing the various elements of this track into a coherent whole. May I ask which DAW you're using? Working on learning to use garageband right now, but I feel it's a little bit limited as to what you can do.

The lyrics are well written and compelling. I have to say I agree, it's like a spell humanity has been under, repressing trauma stunts the soul and blunts the intelligence and capacity to feel, but such repression has been habitually lofted up as a virtue. The better able you are to feel and process pain, the better able you are to feel and process joy. It's all part of the same package and, although the circumstances that trigger uncomfortable emotions might be destructive, the emotions themselves are not.

Hey @bennettitalia! Thanks for listening to my piece! Although it is limited, garageband is what I feel most comfortable with using on the fly, so that's what I created it in. One of my good friends @rusty-jernigan uses Ableton Live and Logic, among others, and I'm interested in looking into Max MSP as well.

As far as your synopsis on the dynamics of emotional repression and trauma denial, excellently put!

Thanks @d-pend, this post was refreshing to read and listen to, as I don't very often come across others with a similar viewpoint on these issues.

Check out (and contribute to, if you wish) the collaborative poem I started, just for fun and to build community in the poetry section of Steemit: https://steemit.com/poetry/@bennettitalia/steemit-collaborative-poetry-experiment

This is just a fun experiment, and it's already getting pretty silly, but I would be honored if you felt inspired to contribute a couple of lines :) My goal for this is to start a series of similar poems, maybe one per week, on different themes, to bring the poetry community together, and to do a video with each finished poem, with attributions. We'll see if this first one even gets off the ground :D

Also, If you have time to take a look at some of my work, I'd love to hear what you think:

btw what is Dsound? Is that a Steem platform for musicians to post their work?

@dsound is a decentralized streaming/music hosting platform built on the STEEM blockchain. It was created by the Steemian @prc and is still relatively new. It works well and is easy to use, in my experience! All you need to log in is your Steemit credentials, so give it a try sometime.

Niiice!! Will do so as soon as I have something to post :)

The address is dsound.audio. And just sign in with your Steemit stuff like he said above. It's JUST like soundcloud, but on the blockchain and you get paid!

Yooooooo!!!!
Dude I feel like I’ve been scouring steemit for hours looking for jams like this and only just found your page because of a comment you left on another beatmakers page! Not to remotely tell you what to do as you obviously have your game together on here, but I’d post in #originalmusic as that’s where all the openmic tracks that are original jams go and the hashtag seems to be picking up speed. I’ve been jamming on it all day.

I’d super appreciate any good, original music on steemit - centric advice. I just started making original modular synth and drum vids for here out of the studio i work at, and like every noob on this platform I’m struggljng to figure out the networking and exposure game.

If you ever wanna collab that is -what- I’m her for and why I have a huge projection behind me in the drum vids! Vehicle for collaboration full onnnn!

Excellent! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE launch a SERIES of these. I think this UNIQUE genre is a REAL WINNER for you, @d-pend. It is very "Beck"-like, and I believe that the integration of the b-box (and general "song") elements enables you to keep the lyrics more "grounded" in such a way that a larger audience can GRASP the meaning - that is, NOT mocking your more abstract work. I would upvote ANY/ALL of thus type of post, gladly. It also enables you to educate your audience on the generally esoteric art of b-boxing (through some technical notes. Three thumbs up!

Hey @transcript-junky! You're definitely right about this format lending itself better to simpler words. That's something that causes me to have a love/hate relationship with songwriting, since I lean towards more abstract expression :-D.

There is something satisfying and grounding (as you noted) about thinking about the sound as a whole that makes me hesitant to overcomplicate it (beyond a certain point.) I'm definitely grateful for the response I've gotten on this post and will start to create more in this vein. Hope you're doing well! Thanks for your time & attention! :-)

Your choice of music is great.

Enjoy the vote and reward!

@d-pend - Dude! You are unreal! I was blown over when I heard the vocals. It is hard to believe it is just you singing. The changeover of voice to a kind of deeper one with 'wanna be free' is just classic..
I did not even pay attention to the lyrics at first. However, when I heard it the second time, I could relate to them. We all DO hide our faces and try to hide our pain..
Hats off. Standing ovation ...

Haha I appreciate that man. It is pretty funny how you can layer yourself and create a one-man band. I always admired people like Ben Folds and Jacob Collier who do a lot of multi-tracking. I just created it on a whim, because I felt like doing something other than poetry, and I had a melody on my mind :-D

Really stoked that you liked it, that encourages me to work on more similar projects in the future!

Thanks @vm2904!

a new work in the music that in wait music lovers, I think you are being create something new.

This poetry is a masterpiece, the best of all.
When our existence ties us to the material misery, it is time to wake up with a reborn heart in our paradise. Thank you for amazing and deep soul poetry @d-pend
