Crocodile Tears

in #dsound6 years ago (edited)

This is my first venture into dsound, so I hope I'm doing this right. This song was written around 2000, before marriage and children and before learning who I really was. I was singing with some great musicians and had access to some recording time. While none of my songs were ready to be recorded for producing, I wanted to get what I did have recorded so that I could listen to it and get a different perspective. I literally recorded 18 pieces, back-to-back with only one re-do in about 90 minutes, so it really was intended for my ears only. Now, after listening to some great musicians through Steemit and Dsound (@nathankaye, @dantanner, @melissakellie, @coruscate) I've been inspired to share my unfinished pieces. Although they're not polished, they do tell a story of where I once was and the passion for music that is still flickering within.

I chose @Crowbarmama as a handle because I believe in doing the best you can with what you have on hand. The crowbar is a multi-purpose tool. You’ll notice my photography is a bit rough, my grammar is not the most polished, but as a homeschooling, homesteading mama of 4, if I waited to take my photos until the light was perfect or re-edited my posts a 5th time ( I shoot for 3 drafts), I would never get a post out!

Don’t sweat the small stuff, just Crowbar it!

This was wonderful, @crowbarmama! I loved it.
That picture makes you look like you came straight out of Nashville after a long day of recording. Haha

Haha! Thanks @rigaronib. The picture is it's own story and was taken about 10 years after the recording!

I was asked to sit in for my old band and after a decade away from the scene, I was feeling out of my element. A friend offered to give me a makeover, complete with pink and blue highlights, makeup and even lending me an outfit since my wardrobe had turned into that of a soccer mom by then. Then she setup this photoshoot to use for her hairstylist portfolio and it turned out I knew the photographer from my old mallrat days, so he came to the show and it turned into another full photo shoot! Pretty wild experience and it still makes me chuckle.

Holy smokes, lady! You're life has been all kinds of crazy! haha

Variety is the spice of life, right? Lol!

So very true!

Wow, where do I even start! I am so proud of you for taking the leap and being willing to get vulnerable with us and share your music.

This song was full of so much raw emotion, that it literally moved me to tears. @soundlegion once said that you can feel really good music on your skin. I think anyone who listens to this will be able to feel all of the emotions coming through your voice.

Side note... it was fun to learn about your username! I have wondered what the crowbar references stood for. I’m totally with you on that front! Waiting until everything is absolutely perfect means we would never end up posting anything. Especially for you as a mama of four!

Seriously, I loved this song and I’m so excited for you that you are sharing your original music here.

Thanks so much for your kind words and encouragement!!

What a perfect description! I would have to agree wholeheartedly. There are songs that just resonate with me, that I can listen to over and over, but I can't always put into words why.

It was really interesting to go back and hear these tracks from where I am now.

I love that you seem to favour songs in 6/8. It's my favourite time signature :) Another great song and once again I love your voice.

Thanks! It's got a nice feel, plus I tend to strum in that pattern. Straight ahead 2/4 strumming is harder for me.

(I had already replied to this the other day, but I don't know why it didn't work - cross fingers it works this time) Catchy chorus hook. You craft a good story that impels the listener to want to know what happens next. Well done!

Thanks! I appreciate that you actually listened to the story.

Also, congrats on your 1st place with Openmic! That post was epic. Just gorgeous and so much raw emotion.

I've been working on a cover for this week's Openmic. Can you believe it took me 30 takes and I'm still not sure I got a good recording? Between screaming kids, and everything else that goes into.homesteading & homeschooling it's a miracle anything was recorded.

I won??!! No, I don't think so. Just one of the judges @meno made me number 1 of his Top 5, which is still incredibly awesome, but it's not the whole contest. Luz posts about that and I haven't seen him post the winners as yet.

Oh, I know what you mean. I'm fulltime carer of my 23 month old daughter and 7 year old step-daughter (my 18 year old has moved out), so I have this tiny window of opportunity between when I get the baby to sleep and have to pick up the 7 year old from school to shoot videos, but we just have to do our best as quickly as possible.
I'm doing another collaboration with Ben Lee this week, but not until later on in the week.

Good luck with your entry! And remember, it's just about the joy of having the opportunity to share your music with our community here.
Blessings and good vibes to you!

Doh! That's what I meant. That's what I get for staying up past my bedtime! Lol! We'll, maybe I'm inadvertently reading the future? ;-)

Anyway, that's awesome that you're able to be home with your daughter. My husband has been working from home for nearly 3 years now, and it's so awesome to have him around.

Looking forward to your collaboration. I'm self-taught on guitar, really only using it for song-writing and I did play backup on stage but rarely. It's frustrating because I've barely picked it up in the last couple years and it shows! I'm focusing so much on trying to nail the chords, that my performance isn't where I want it. Sundays are my day for recording, so if I don't enter this week, I'll have to wait until next week.

it's just about the joy of having the opportunity to share your music with our community here.

That makes me want to share it in it's current form. I mean, even if it's not exactly where I want it to be, it's never going to be 'done'. Music doesn't work that way. It's ever-changing, evolving and alive.

Thanks for the encouragement brother!
