Success
I can see this turning into a ramble more than a post about success. I may very well fail at writing about success. Like all topics there are many ways to approach it. In so many ways when I think about it, success comes back to monetary gain. How successful a film is by how much the box office takes is a standard measure in the industry. I think most of us can relate to that measurement of success in a circumstance like this. That this same measurement overflows to the daily lives of people is where things break down. It leaves only financial gain as a measurement for all things.
At the very least I will successfully post this post. What will make the post successful once it is posted? How many read it? How many agree? How many vote? How much the reward is? any of these could be used to measure a successful post and any other used to measure its failing.
Not to worry about the outcome and write the post I think would be more successful then thinking about why it might flop. If it flops I tried, if I learn something from the flop. I succeeded in learning.
How to measure success comes into difficulty when it is compared to another success. From the hacker who develops other uses for a product. To the end user who uses the product to help them succeed in a venture or game. How do you compare the success of an athlete to that of a scientist or farmer. Why is our own success rated by others? As individuals we compare ourselves to others, other compare us between each other, When we measure ourselves as a people on a planet how successful are we?
Looking at the developments made, our ability to do so many more things than we could previous. Are we succeeding or failing as a whole. We make advances in medical care, only to have a patient addicted to a substance they may not have needed. Many times creating new ailments that will need medication for the rest of a life. People are born into a society of debt, that getting out of would be a hard thing to do. The cost to living today requires a whole family to work to get by. When our grandfathers worked, He was the sole worker in a family much of the time, and provided for all. In some ways it seems the more we learn, the less people are entitled to the information.
On the other hand, scientific breakthroughs are amazing. The ability to look at things in the micro world, even down to the quantum scale. We send rockets into space explore other planets remotely. We can read the genetic code of plants and animals. We gain new technologies from the research we do. We can build bigger more durable structures. We can build smaller more intricate devices. It seem's there is no limit to what we can do on the large or smaller scales. New technologies permit us to do more and more. Surely, that is progression and success?
We go to war to achieve these things. The quality of life to a massive quantity is drastically reduced. People are placed in hardship for the control over a region of land. Lives are lost on both sides and families torn apart. The damage dismissed for the benefit of wealth. Lies are told about other nations to manipulate a population. Truths are hidden about government actions to protect the guilty. We pollute the oceans and land with chemicals and plastics, destroy habitats which developed over centuries. Shouldn't progress over time remove the damage and destruction we cause?
As a dominant species on a planet,
we fail in more areas than we succeed.
We reach the top merely to destroy each other and our environment.

It seems that the more people involved in success, the less chance of it happening. There are a lot of individual successes out there, but like you pointed out, as a whole are we really successful when you look at what we as a group have done to the world.
It can feel at times, The greater the achievement the greater the damage.
To me its measured by goals achieved.
What about opposition goals you deflect?
Really loved how you laid out your points here. I think more than ever before - I was able to see your passion, your frustration - but without being aggressive. It was really great.
and i liked how you spoke about measuring our successes against one another and the drawbacks of comparing... and
wow - i just really loved this one.
Thank you. Sounds like this might be my Successful post. The view was easier to share when it was a thought and hard to put to words.

STOPAs I read this, I kept thinking about the balance between success and failure. We need both. I think the best success is learning from the failures. It feels the best anyone. I do wish, as people of this world, that it wouldn't take such great failures like war and destroying the planet to get there.
Maybe as a people working together we can make those changes.
