Playful Palomas- The Sunshine of Cocktails

I wish I could claim full responsibility for dreaming up this cocktail, but it was actually concocted with the help of my mother. Her suggestion of a splash of citrus soda, brought out the sweetness of the freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. And while I wanted to opt for gin, her selection of tequila was actually the better choice for a bright, citrusy drink such as this.

This drink is the perfect, refreshing beverage for a day spent in the sun. But if you’re currently trapped indoors due to Snowmageddon 2019, this may be the perfect drink to remind you that summertime still exists, somewhere out there, and it’s making its way to you, one day at a time.

For those who don’t have access to fresh grapefruit juice, store bought is just fine, and would add a lovely pink hue to the beverage.

I used a mix of red chile powder, lime salt, and sugar for the rim. And the addition of spice contrasted with the sweet drink made each sip an adventure in taste.

Ingredients:

For a Single Drink

• ⅔ cup grapefruit juice
• splash of citrus soda (we used Squirt, but 7up or Sprite would do just fine)
• 1.75 oz silver tequila (Sauza, in this case)
• 1 ounce Triple Sec

For a Pitcher

• 4 cups grapefruit juice
• ¾ cup citrus soda
• 10.5 ounces silver tequila (6 shots)
• 6 ounces Triple Sec (3.5 shots)

Combine all ingredients, stir, serve over ice and enjoy!
