My dragon for #dragoncontest
Hi Everybody here is my dragon for theDragon Art Contest by @kristyglas.
Just, passionate and kind, his name is Red Fire. Painted in Photoshop.
Here is a revised version, I thought it needed a better range of values so I added some darker darks and brighter highlights.
I start off with the core (rib and pelvis) and draw flowing forms out of the core thinking of the spine holding it all together.
Then I design the shapes of the limbs and wings. I'm looking for a clear silhouette and cool looking negative shapes.
Then I add the detail trying not to disrupt the clear silhouette and creating more cool negative shapes.
Then I tie-down the shapes.
And finally, add detail and a bit of shading.
Then the final color that you saw at the beginning. This was more about how to approach design versus how to paint. If anyone is interested I can do a separate post about how I painted it.
This is a very beautiful painting ... it looks real and the coloring technique is very great .. anything you painted really beautiful and great.I hope one day you want to paint my face @gabrielvalles
Thank you @thaodai !
absolutely love this design was that coloring done digitally or on paper?
Thank you @barrysamways I appreciate your comment. This was painted in Photoshop. I guess I should have mentioned that. :)
I figured. awesome job. I would love if you checked out some of the art work I create at my page let me know what you think
@barrysamways your work looks good! I can even see positive progress from your earlier post to your most recent. It looks like you have a really good grasp of the technical process. Good enough to make a clear tutorial.
If you wanted to push yourself even more, I would suggest trying to do some with a little more spontaneity. Give yourself permission to loosen up and not feel like you have to have it perfectly shaded. It's more important to capture the essence of the person than to be technically correct.
Here is a good example of someone working in pencil. You can see the confidence in her marks but most importantly she knows how to push the drama of the subjects.

I hope this helps! I look forward to seeing more of your work!
this may be the best comment I read since I started here on steemit. very sincere, I will definitely try your advise. it may really further my capabilities as an artist. if you get stuck doing the same thing all the time you can never really learn anything new I guess. I will keep this In mind with the piece I am currently working on. Thanks for taking the time to look at my posts!
Cheers.
Thanks! I run an art school so I guess that's part of my daily routine. :D
it shows
Wow, I like the dynamics and expression of your work, really cool!
And yes, I think it will be interesting to see how you painted it in Photoshop :)
Thanks Anastasia! When I get a chance I'll post my Photoshop steps. To be honest, this painting could still use a bit of work but I had to call it done. :)
Very well done Gabrielvalles !
@woodywood143 Thank you sir!

Wow! Good job! I love it!
@heretolisten Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Very nice and thank you for showing how you draw it. It means so much more to me when you see how the creation comes to fruition. I always liked dragons but had a hard time drawing them. I think your tips will help!
An UV & RS from abow. :)
