Dpoll 54: How was your time at school?/Is school needed to be successful in life?

Do you remember your time at school? Did you have a good time? Were you bullied or perhaps the bully? How about the teachers? Were they honest or did they discriminate? How willing were they to teach?

I have a very long experience with schools.
Not only all those years I spent at it but also the many years my children went to school - and the youngest still are at -.
(My eldest will be 36 years old next month.)

for most jobs and professions, the bosses require a highschool diploma, technical college entrance qualification or apprenticeship and all with good grades. So if you don't get good grades, you're in a much tougher position. But education is still no guarantee for a job. School should be fair, school should be fun. Don't pigeonhole or stubbornly follow the curriculum. In music, for example, not only dry knowledge, but also being able to learn noise and music yourself or being able to start a band. And poverty should in no case play a role.

Thank you for voting and your opinion. Times have changed. As I started working employers did ask for diploma + the list with grades but as years passed by no one asked for the grades any longer or your diploma. They ask for years of experience and prefer a 16 year old.

I finished middle school with a successful maturity exam as a private student in 2012.
After I became private stundent, I have not attended (presented myself) in the school lessons. I was present only during the maturity exam. I became a private student, because almost all of my classmates were bullied me. Just like in elementary school.
Nowadays most of the people (especially my co-workers, my collagues and my boss) are nice and kind to me.

Thank you for your vote. Isn't it strange how life suddenly changes once those schoolpressure is over? Is it because mostvare more mature or do we value people at work in a different way?
Many students love to pick on others..We have a tv program about being bullied. The victim, bullies and teacher are invited. It is interesting to see how bullies lie and deny, teachers know but didn't act ...
I am happy your life improved and you are liked and appreciated now. 💕

Great was your school time?

Generally, had the best time of my life in school. Not because of study, but to have friends. We have this undercover cop teacher in my class. After school he often took us to his studio and coach us to start a band rather than smoking crack and hangout at the arcade. I didn't get good grade, but I had loads of fun, and that philosophy continue to shape who I am 🙃

Good to hear you had a great time. A teacher makes the difference. With us schoolbstarts at the age of 4-18 (law) all those years were great for you? 💕

I can't remember much in my kindergarten, but generally it was alright.

My first grade teacher is very fierce, but now I think it's just the way it is. It's not kindergarten anymore, I'm facing bigger crowd and bigger kids around. By right the teachers supposed to act different compare to kindergarten? But it was alright, at least I didn't ran out of school and gotten run over by a truck.

4th grade was a nightmare. The teacher has a same surname as me, but I think she doesn't like me. He complaints the shit out of me and got my mom had my ass whipped. Few years ago, I met the teacher again, after 30 over years she can still remember my name. She was saying she does that because she has high expectation in me since we're from the same root(Chinese stuff, we see same surname as close relatives). Now that I think of it, I should thank her for keeping me in school and informing my mom on all my wrong doings.

Some of the years, I got to the worst class of that grade, and the teacher doesn't give a flying fish to us and leave us do whatever we want. So, those years I have some good sleep in school.

I can remember one Kindergarten hardly... I know it was the first year. I walked home alone a long distance (years later I went back and drove it by car) and I sat crying on the steps outside because my mother was not at home/opened the door.
I do not remember kindergarten but that plus my sister and I had to walk to my granny. It was even a longer way plus lots of traffic.

We moved and went to a new kindergarten. That teacher was kind and had the task to take care of three sick children. I remember the schooling, the plastic blue bekers, playing outside, sleeping on mattresses after she told us a story...

We do no longer have kindergarten. At that time you had to go to school at the age of 7 now it is 4 years old.

The next school was very old fashioned. I remember the first year... Too many children. A part of them had to leave with a terrible teacher to the auditorium. We had her for two years. She was old, drilled us, set us up against each other... I never had the kind teachers plus I was on a white school. The only foreigners they knew at that time were gypsies and gypsies were famous for stealing.
The headmaster was extremely fat, did beat you up. Years later an old schoolmate told me he left his family because he is gay and lived in a caravan. That man was the first who said I was too stupid to learn, couldn't even make it to housekeeping school (that school no longer exists). It was one of the few times my father went to school - furious - to tell that terrible man his opinion.

Highschool was better. I visited three different schools. The last one was in the South of the Netherlands and Catholic. The principal told me I would have a hard time because I didn't speak the dialect and the people are hostile against people out of the west part of the country. I thought he was kidding me but he was right.

I was happy I left school After I had my diploma I mainly did home study and worked next to it. 💕

I have a last name that is absolutely perfect for bullying which lead to many fights throughout my school career. Even though I was never the aggressor I was the one expelled. I was never an A student, but losing my friends and having to travel over an hour to the next school (along with a myriad of home issues) made me drop out. I worked a couple of retail jobs, but ended up working as a grain bin builder for 10 years. Made good money doing that. Better money than people I know with 4 year degrees and massive debt. Now that we're older my last name is cool. It doesn't get me bullied it gets laughs with me instead of at me.

Thank you for your vote and sharing your experiences. I wonder if the teachers did anything to stop the bullying.
Did it work out better on the next school?
It is good to hear you found your way and did so good. 👍🏻💕
