I am more versed in cats than dogs, but I know it can start young and if you get them fixed before they ever go into heat, you seriously lessen their chances of some types of cancer. I would guess it's a similar situation for dogs?

Idk... both the cats got fixed as soon as they were old enough.. female cat in heat one time will make that decision easy.. but I don't know about the dog..
