Several more dogs sterilized, vaccinated, and treated for parasites

in #dogs5 months ago

We have performed this task hundreds of times already in 2024 and we aim to keep on pace to continue doing it for the rest of this year, and as many years as it takes into the future to get the problem under control. The good news is that we are really starting to notice a drop off in the number of baby strays wandering around and the sterilization method is the only way that this can be done. Puppies are cute, I love them as well. The sheer reality of the situation is, however, untenable and these dogs end up growing up in horrible situations filled with disease, hunger, and suffering. The always live very short lives because there simply isn't enough space or food to keep them all healthy if they are allowed to reproduce unchecked.

It is built into a dog's DNA that they are meant to reproduce as rapidly as possible because when packs of wild dogs needed to accomplish this for survival hundreds of years ago, the constant replenishing of the pack was an absolutely necessary aspect of keeping the pack alive. These days, the dogs have so few natural predators that all this results in is them being unable to find food and then the pack splits up due to competition and infighting for scarce resources. Parasites are also very bad in Thailand due to it always being hot and humid and this is the perfect environment for parasites to thrive.

We were alerted about a couple of young females in a rather remote location and we jumped into action.

Thankfully, both of these girls were quite friendly as well as accustomed to human interaction. The fact that we were called makes us feel good because it shows that even in the remote farming areas, our organization is already known as someone you can call for help in these situations.

In the past this was significantly more difficult for us to accomplish because we had to rely on our own "scouts" to find packs of dogs and didn't have the assistance of the villagers or land owners. Dogs, even friendly dogs, can be very territorial and reluctant to accept any unknown visitors but when the people that the dogs are already familiar with are there to assist us. getting them into the transport crates is as easy as being introduced to them and then giving them some snacks. Sometimes the villagers that look after them will place them into the crates for us.

This makes our job considerably easier because we do not like to use the trapping equipment that we have unless we absolutely must. We don't want to scare, hurt, or traumatize the dogs in our process of simply trying to help them.

These girls were a little afraid and confused about their capture, but once we got them to the vet they were very compliant and even a bit curious about where they were. They will be sterilized, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and then returned to the farming village where we got them from. As is usual, the males of the pack were nowhere to be found when we arrived on site.

This situation makes us happy not only that the villagers called us but this instance also suggests that perhaps the outlying communities are starting to realize the importance of sterilization. Many of the farmers actually need some dogs for their operations, but we have seen many rural areas that get simply overrrun with packs of dogs that become feral and therefore become a dangerous roaming nuisance. When that happens it is quite common for the owners of the land to set poison traps to deal with the problem. This is one of the worst possible fates for a dog as the poison slowly solidifies their internal organs and dehydrates them to the point where they cannot move. They then die a slow an agonizing death over the course of many days and sometimes even longer than that.

It is nice to see that the villagers realize this practice is extremely inhumane and are starting to see that there are other options. We are happy to help and of course we do not expect the villagers to pay for any of it. This is the entire basis for our charity existing. The only thing we do ask of them is to stay in touch with us about the health of the animals, to continue to feed them if possible, and to alert us if any new females appear on their property. Thus far this project has been accepted by the locals and while we still have a lot of work do to, can be considered a great success.
