The Battleborn Mercenary Guild would like to invite you to an opportunity of a lifetime.

We are gathering brave souls to fight for fame and fortune in a series of upcoming Dungeons and Dragons games. This post will serve as a reference to how certain mechanics will play out in post form.
This rule post will cover:

  • Player Rewards
  • Post 'Schedule'
  • Player dropout/death
  • Initiative
  • Dice Rolls
  • Players' Roles
  • Character Sheets

Player Rewards

80% of the liquid earnings for all posts relating to this game will be put into my 'Savings Wallet' to become the prize pool, the remaining 20% will be spent on original artwork for the game, and a surprise or two I have up my sleeve. Players will receive 'Guild Tokens' for each post they participate in, and the tokens will be given as follows:

  • Every player who participates in a round will receive one token
  • I will give out three extra tokens per round to players who I think have played well
  • Anyone who rolls a 'natural 20' will receive a bonus token (Limit one per player per round)

When a dungeon is completed, the guild will split the prize pool depending on the number of tokens each player holds at the end. For example:

If at the end of a dungeon there are 120 tokens generated, and the prize pool is 240 SBD, each token would be worth 2 SBD.
If Tim has 60 of those tokens, the guild would pay him 120 SBD
If Joe has 35, his prize would be 70 SBD

Post Schedule

I want this to be a fast-paced game, so if you decide to play, be sure you're able to be fairly active on Steemit. Players will have 72 hours to respond to a given post with their action for that round. If you know you will be unable to participate in the next round, I can be reached on steemit.chat or discord by the same username.

Player Dropout/Death

If a player does not respond within the 72 hour timeframe, and has not contacted me about it, they will be penalized 1 Guild Token the first time, and will be considered "inactive" if it continues. If this happens, a "benchwarmer" player will assume control of that character, and continue on through the dungeon with the party.

In the event of a character's death, the person playing that character will become a "benchwarmer" and a new player will gain control of a new charcter that the guild sends to help "complete the contract". No Tokens are lost by the player who is killed, and they will get another chance to participate again and earn more Tokens.

Initiative

I will be using a 'group initiative' system, as it will be the easiest way to organize battles. Players and enemies will each roll initiative at the beginning of a battle like normal, but each opposing side's initiative will be totalled. If the adventurers have the higher total initiative, they will act first, their actions taking place in the order of their individual initiatives, then the opposing side will act in the same manner.

This should help at least a little with the flow of things, but won't fix it all. For example:

Bob the Barbarian and Sarah the Sorceress both attack the same enemy. Bob has a higher initiative so he attacks first. If he kills the enemy, where does that leave Sarah's attack?

To save the time it would take to figure out what Sarah would like to do, her attack will be redirected at the nearest enemy. There will be certain situations where this may not be the best solution. Those situations will be considered by me, and I may require a player to decide their next course of action.

Dice Rolls

All dice rolls that need to be made will be transparent, and by me, including DM rolls. I was going to write my own dice roller for this, but that may have to come when I have a bit more time to work on something like that. In the meantime, rolls will be made using a nifty little app I have on my phone. When a roll is needed for a given action or attack, players will get a reply to their comment that looks something like this:

Again, any 'natural 20' will gain the player an extra Token for the round, but is limited to only 1 per player per round.

Players' Roles

Up to 6 players at a time will play as heroes enlisted by the guild to complete a contract. Those 6 players will continue playing their characters until they die. This could mean a few people playing all the way through multiple dungeons.

Any other interested people will be considered "benchwarmers", ready to take the place of any character when needed. Benchwarmers will go into rotation on a first come, first to play basis. Once a bmchwarmer has played a role, they will go into the bottom of the rotation.

Benchwarmers will also have the opportunity to earn Guild Tokens by assuming the role of the enemies, whether they be bandits, monsters, or even just rats. If in a given encounter post, there are 3 orc pillagers raiding a town, I would love to have 3 people ready to roleplay those orcs, and fight the heroes. Playing the enemy would gain a benchwarmer the same benefits associated with Guild Tokens as those playing the heroes, including the bonus tokens given out by the DM (me). If you play that orc pillager like a badass, I'll throw you an extra share of the prize pool, just like I would someone who roleplays their character well.

Character Sheets

Players will have full D&D 5e character sheets associated with them. Characters will be rolled/created by me, and players will be given a range of characters to choose from. I will be creating 2-3 characters of each class to start, and will make more as needed. I will be poating a summary of each character I roll, with descriptions and character sheets. Players will be able to choose from any character that has been posted, and that character is forever theirs.
I will post screenshots of each, if requested and if anything has changed from the last SS, once per round.

Having a full character sheet can be a double-edged sword. It certainly requires more work from me to keep up with it all, but while it makes things easier for everyone, it can sometimes lake it difficult for the player, too. You will be requires to roleplay your character, and 5e Dungeons and Dragons is pretty good at defining what a character is and how they act. If you want those extra Guild Tokens, you'll need to pay attention to every detail of your character.

I will be writing another post that will detail how rounds will be managed, and what will be expected of players when a new round begins.

I've been playing and DMing pen and paper roleplaying games for over 20 years. I can promise this game is going to be a lot of fun. Posts will have as much detail as I can muster, and will have some nice little flares I think you guys will like a lot.

I hope to create a fun and exciting experience while also rewarding people for getting involved and playing well. I hope Steemit is ready for what the Battleborn Mercenary Guild has in store for it, because this is going to be epic!

100% of the liquid earnings for this post will go toward the prize pool for this game.

Nice nice. Back in action on steemit. Looking forward to this!

It's gonna be ridiculous. You of all people know how I run a campaign...

This game will take place on the new @battleborn account. Can't wait to get started!

Awesome! Hope I can get in the premiere game. Havent played much DnD but I am a pretty experienced roleplayer. Even making plans for a death note investigative style rp game, lot of issues to iron out though.

I would definately be interested in playing. This is coming togeather quite nicely.

Cool, count me in, can't resist, and a 72 hour period to respond should be more than enough!

I thought so too. Hopefully, everyone responds quickly, and we can get a daily post going!

Keeping my eye on this.

Sounds good, thanks :)

Thats sounds fun
