Making Homemade Lotion
These homemade products are super easy to make; I’m not sure why I haven’t tried this before!
I have a bunch of Shea butter to use after making my lip balm. I tried to think of more homemade goodies I could make using it. Why not lotion?!
I found a recipe and doubled it since I had a 16 oz glass jar to use. (I knew saving peanut butter and speghetti sauce jars would come in handy!) I measured out 2/3 cup Shea butter into a glass bowl and softened it in the microwave long enough to whip it smooth with a spoon. About 40 seconds.
Then I mixed in 2/3 cup room temperature coconut oil. I whipped it up with a hand beater until it was the consistency of lotion.
The recipe called for lavender essential oil, but I opted to add in orange instead. Pour into a glass jar, and all done!
I tried it out, and it was bit greasier than I anticipated. I’m thinking I may have measured out a little more coconut oil than Shea butter. Plus, a little bit goes a long way! Overall, I’m quite pleased with it. This jar should last me quite a while.
Side note: I’m starting to get the vibe from loved ones that they think I’m a little crazy for making all these things from scratch. Has anyone else experienced this?

I really needed to make something that will work well, since I ruined my hands washing dishes by hand. And the white liquid water store version doesn’t cut it!

Homemade goodies!
I make all our household cleaners also! It's a fun activity to do with our kids and they love coming up with new "scents" for their shampoo and hand soaps with essential oils. Love that you do this!

I actually was playing around with a concoction last week to clean our walk in shower tile/grout. I HATE using CLR or anything toxic but it seemed like that was the only cleaning agent that was working to remove the grime from the tile. BUT, what I did was sprinkle baking soda and oxyclean powders all over the shower tile... sides and all (your arms will look like a ghost :); let it sit for 20 minutes; then in a spray bottle i put white vinegar (3/4 part vinegar and 1/4 distilled water); spray the tile and listen for the "sizzle;" let vinegar work it's magic for another couple minutes; take a scrub brush and scrub tile/grout; rinse clean with warm water. It worked!

Ha! Yeah, people will start to think you are a little crazy when you start making things yourself. I (Andrew) actually started a little all-natural skin care products business back in the city. I really enjoyed making products that were actually good for you. Even though we don't do that anymore, I still have the skills I gained from that experience, and I love making these things for us.
There’s something satisfying about making things from scratch. I don’t know why people think it’s crazy. Probably because they haven’t given it a try themselves!
