DIY Off-the-Shoulder Shirt

in #diy8 years ago (edited)

A few days ago, I made a Steemit shirt using fabric paint. It's super easy to make, inexpensive, and a lot of fun! Check it out if you haven't done so already!

For this tutorial, I'm going to cut the shirt so that it lays off-the-shoulder. The style is causal, and works well on oversized shirts. You may want to practice this technique on an older shirt first (one you wouldn't mind messing up) to get the hang of it. Materials: Scissors, Marker, Ruler, Shirt. Step 1: Using a marker, draw a dot on the front of the shirt where you are going to make your first cut. I like to start about half way between the shoulder seam and the collar. Step 2: Grab a ruler and place one end on the dot made at the shoulder, and the other end in the middle of the shirt right below the collar. Draw a dot at this location. Step 3: Connect the two dots by drawing a curved line. Don't worry about how this looks, you will cut this line during the next steps. Step 4: Make a cut at the first dot, breaking through the seam at the shoulder. Step 5: Next, CUT ONLY THE TOP LAYER OF THE SHIRT following the line you drew. Step 6: Cut the material along the seam that connects the first dot and the collar. Step 7: Fold over the hanging piece of fabric to the other side of the shirt, making sure everything is lined up nicely. Use this as a guide, and finish cutting the top layer of the shirt until you reach the opposite shoulder seam. Step 8: Starting from the first dot location, draw a relatively straight line on the back layer of the shirt until you reach the other side of the shoulder seam. Step 9: Cut the back layer of the shirt using the line you drew as a guide (completely removing the collar from the shirt). Step 10: Gently stretch your shirt out where you made the cuts. This should make the material curl a bit, giving it a more clean look. That's it! I hope you found this tutorial helpful. Have fun and be creative! Thanks! -Birdie
