DIY Bow Build - Part 1
Hey Steemers!!
I just started the process of building a new bow. This particular bow will be made of red oak with cocabola overlays. The design is a replica of the ancient Mollegabet bow that originated near modern day Denmark. It's a relatively easy bow to build for beginners, so follow along over the next few days and I'll explain and share the progress with you all.
So far, I've drawn out and cut out the basic shape of the bow. These pictures show the overlays being glued on the handle back and the tips. This will give strength to the tips and handle.
Tomorrow, I'll start cutting out the shape of the handle and begin taking wood off the working part of the limbs. I'll do a short video explaining what I'm doing.
Thanks for following along!! (^_^)
Great work on this bow. I was wondering, do you have to use a specific type of wood, or do some woods work better than others? Like are some springier for instance for stronger force?
Absolutely. Some woods are excellent for making bows and others won't work at all. Red Oak is easily accessible from hardware stores, is cheap, and great for beginners. More experienced bowmakers use yew, orange osage, hickory, ash, bamboo, etc. Depends on the type of bow and how strong you want the bow.
Cool! I can’t wait to see the process.
