#discussion : Is "Money Talks" an Appropriate Slogan for Steemit?
Hellow Steemians. Steemit, Inc. has just announced some important updates. One of them is the change of slogan that a visitor sees when she visits steemit.com:
We are all sad to see it go, but “Welcome to the Blockchain” has been replaced. New users who land on steemit.com will now see “Money talks. Your voice is worth something. Join the community that pays you to post and curate high quality content.”
This change immediately caused a debate between Steemians. So, I thought it deserves a #discussion post.
So, What do you think? Is "Money Talk" a good slogan for Steemit? If you disagree, then what is your suggestion?

I think it’s a horrible idea. Many people around the world are sick and tired of being controlled by money. It’s a greed that people chase to the ends of the earth over and it’s highlighting the wrong incentive. From a culture standpoint there are those who believe in whatever is necessary. This could be inviting in the wrong crowd of people who plagiarize and steal to make a quick buck.
On top of that if you come here thinking you will make it rich oh buddy you going be disappointed! Like anything in life the top 1% of something tend to make out very well. You get some lucky people in between. Then rest who if they came here for many would leave after a short while.
Even if you live in a country where your daily income is just $1 a day that’s usually not something you will even get until you have put in some time and effort. Even more so if you live in a country where $2 an hour is the normal. It puts Steemit less out of reach as they won’t be making $2 an hour here for a while if ever.
I put a lot of time into writing and engaging here. If I was focused on the money I would be long gone. If money was all I cared about I would be better off working at Walmart then time I have spent here. Like a lot of people I followed when I first started they didn’t last longer than two weeks. Many came thinking they were going make more cash than they do where ever they live. That was not the case so they just vanished.
Instead, we need a slogan that is more focused around what Steemit really is. It’s about the community and the people in it.
Is the best I can think of. Steemit can be a wonderful place to build a following on whatever your current and future adventures in life take you. Everything from cryptocurrency related stuff such as launching an ICO to sharing your home steading life and everything in between.
I agree. The slogan has a somewhat scummy connotation to it. This is something you would most likely hear on Wall St. and in Washington, DC, where all of the banksters, palm-greasers, lobbyists and politicians hang out.
Yes, for better or worse, the fact that "money matters" as much as it does is widely considered the source of all our plagues these days.

Do you know if they ask the community or even had a poll? I would have hoped we as a community would have come up with something better than “money talks”
Unfortunately, I don't think they did!
I agree with you that they should consult with the community before making such a decision that affects everyone.
Yet, maybe they will see this post and change their mind.
I guess then money does talk and our voices must not have been valued enough to be heard from. I can only hope we are wrong and are kindly corrected.
I can understand to a point. There would been an endless amount of suggestion for cryptocurrency based slogans. Trying to break out from that wall and spread our roots into other sections of social pool can be hard.
I can only hope then they at least ask witnesses or large Steem holders privately.

It doesn't portray the true values that I have come to discover.
It reduces steemit to a graveyard of greed and 'quality nonsense content'.

Knowledge and friendship tend to be the values I have taken away from Steemit so far. What values have you grown to enjoy that you have discovered so far?
I think money should be a great addition or extra but not the forefront or the main advertising pitch. I think of it more like the icing on the cake.

Yes, "money" to most people means cash, consumerism and oppressive work relations. Right or wrong, that's not a great pitch for a social network.

I am new to Steemit, and I think such a slogan is Not a good one.
I think it will make steem look like a place for making money. This will be the main focus. most people do not use social media platforms to make money! They use it for social networking. So, this should be the main focus of the slogan.
It can often be hard to boil down your own creation and sum it up short enough to be a “slogan.” They seem to have focused on creating something rather short. It feels like an ad agency created it for them. Trying to mimic many other successful brands that use very short ones.
I will say it’s not memorable enough for me to associate it with Steemit what so ever. I in fact had to double check again as writing this that its only two words long. “Money talks” seems more like something I would hear or see in a Hollywood movie then a social site. Therefore, when I see it I recall some movie I can’t make ought enough to even know what it was about.
I think that "Welcome to Blockchain" was more appropriate than "Money Talks" . After all if Steemit INC wants to improve the quality of the content, the posts and the talk in general should not be all about the money.
Well, money is the most important thing for most of us. For the terms of attraction, it's successful and effective. However, it may mislead some newcomers thinking steemit is a place for making money. Actually, it's a breeding ground for sharing opinions in high quality. As a result, there will be less and less prestigious articles in steemit.
Btw, have someone thinks that it's troublesome to type 'steemit' in mac ('steemit' will be corrected).
I have seen a few who arrive at Steemit being sold on the idea they will make money. They then make assumptions that it will be worth of their time kind of money. While it’s true they made a few cents and maybe a buck or two that was not what they had in mind. So they leave frustrated thinking it’s not a place for them.
As far Mac. No way to auto correct the correction? I was wondering at what point would systems start to either accept the spelling of Steemit or refute it out right.
you should know better than anyone, that for some, it's all about money, considering the number of bots on your tail. ^_^
However, It's hard to come up with a good slogan for steemit.
Well, using upvote bots is controversial subject that deserves a #discussion post itself. However, I am glad to explain my point of view :
I lose money most of the time with those bots. In some cases, you get less than what you have paid. If you consider that the author gets only 75% of the payouts, then it becomes a definitive loss. That is unless your post has quality, and you get upvotes from fellow Steemians for that.
So in short, my answer is: Yes, I use upvote bots, but I do that only so I can get visibility for my posts. Otherwise, they would get burried :(
That said, I still don't think we should promote Steemit as the place where "money talks". it incentivises people towards the wrong direction.
I have been wondering when those will start to pop up under this tag as well. They do tend to be a bit of a hot topic.
I personally don’t use them much anymore. I’ll try out a new one just for a bit of fun here or there. They are really great if you write high quality content and need a way to rise above the rest to get noticed. When that happens they can more than pay for the cost.
I'm not against using bots, just wanted to point out money is a strong theme on steemit. ^_^
It definitely is, but it should not be the defining one.
Good does not usually start at the beginning. Only takes a couple “ok” ones to work your way up to a good or even a great one.
Do you have any “ok” slogans?
